What to buy for a beginner? Hockey skates or figure skates - summary

First, there is no better skate or better sport between figure skating and hockey.
There are often small conflicts between hockey skaters and figure skaters or people skating with hockey skates or figure skates.
But both allow impressive moves. Don't let people tell you what is supposed to be 'cooler' to wear.

Hockey skates vs Figure skates - which ones to choose:

Whatever the chosen sport, the beginner has to learn a set of basic skating skills: balance, posture, stopping, stroking.
You can learn with both types of skates. However, it is often considered that the long blade of figure skates makes it easier to get balance at the beginning.
I think you should choose your skates based on your skating objectives.
Below are more detailed answers based on different situations.

FB hockey skates vs figure skates

If you do know what sport you want to practice

If you already know you want to do figure skating or hockey. Then no need to wonder. Just start learning on the right skates for your sport.
If you want to speed, turn, stop fast choose the hockey skate.
If you want to jump and spin, choose figure skates.

If you just want to skate as fast as possible

If you just want to have fun during public skating session and be able to go as fast as possible, then hockey skates are for you. Just know that it will take a little bit more time to get the balance (unless you are used to roller blading)

If you want to feel safer at the beginning and progress faster

Figure skates have longer blades with toe picks. It is easier to find balance with them. So, most people feel safer when starting with figure skates.
Therefore beginners normally progress faster with figure skates.

Should my child start with figure skates or hockey skates?

Considering it is easier to find balance with figure skates, it is often a better choice for young kids. They will feel more confident fast.
Anyway the choice of ice skates for toddlers is limited. Check out my article about the best options.

Whichever skates you choose, ice skating is great exercise with many benefits.

Hockey skates or figure skates - differences in the boots

The main difference between the hockey skating boots and the figure skating boots are in their respective designs. While figure skating boots consist of multiple layers of leather, which makes them highly expensive, the boots worn by the hockey skater are made up of both leather and light plastics and are relatively cheaper.

Figure skating boots characteristics

  • they have a small outer heel and a wooden sole inside to provide extra comfort;
  • they are light, short and thin as compared to hockey skating boots when placed side by side;
  • they are shaped specifically for performing precision moves and not speed runs as is deemed necessary for ice hockey skating.

Ice Hockey boots characteristics

  • they are solely meant to cater to good support of the feet in order to make standing erect easy, something which is not a requirement for figure skating boots;
  • they are taller, thicker and are heavily padded with foam to safeguard against collision with other hockey players and hits from hockey sticks and the puck;
  • they are designed to take all kinds of abuse, for a long stretch of time.
figure skate vs hockey skate boot and blade

Comparing the hockey and figure skating blades

Figure skating blades

The blades under the boots of a figure skater have a serrated edge, known as a toe pick, which allows the skater to perform various routines like jumping, spinning, stopping, etc. quite effectively.

Figure skating blades are longer and extend to the length of the boot
They are also wider and heavier than the blades on the hockey skating boots.
The blades are fixed to the boot by a pair of plates known as toe and heel plates.

Hockey blades

Hockey skating blades are narrow and deep so as to allow the player free movement at high speeds.
The blades are slightly curved at the back and front and do not extend beyond the length of the boot. They are more rounded and have less edges.
They are also comparatively much lighter than ice skating blades due to the smaller size.
The blades are fixed to the boots by a solid piece of plastic called tuuk.

Types of skating possible with figure vs hockey skates

Why choose Figure skates?

Pros of the figure skate

  • PRECISION - The longer blade allows the skater to carve better arcs and more perfect lines.
  • SUPPORT & FLEXIBILITY - The boot is tight enough to support the ankle, but flexible enough to flex and jump
  • TOE PICK - The toe pick helps the skater execute jumps and pivots.
figure skates for beginner c

Advantages for the beginner

For a beginner, the figure skates are often considered a better option because they feel more stable: the blade is longer, the toe pick stops the skater from going too far forward on the blade and the tail prevents from leaning too far back.
The beginner often uses the toe pick to propel, getting speed faster at the beginning (even though it is not a good idea to propel with the toe pick).

What are figure skates best shaped for?

The skates are shaped to perform precision moves while gilding and acrobatic moves such as:

  • Jumps: axel, lutz, salchow, to loop...
  • Spins: turning fast on one foot in various positions
  • Technical turns: rocker, twizzles

You won't be able to perform such moves with hockey skates.

Best figure skating coloring book

Why choose Hockey skates?

Pros of the hockey skates

  • PROTECTION - The boots protect the feet against the blades of other players and pucks flying at full speed
  • SPEED - The lighter weight allows players to skate fast and stop fast
  • TURNS - The blades are more curved at both ends. It makes it easier to turn for the skater.
Ice hockey beginner

Advantages for the beginner

For a beginner, the hockey skate option should not be overlooked. Especially if you are looking for speed. They are made for it.
Plus, as I said with the figure skates, beginners use the toe pick for propulsion which is not a good technic. With the hockey skate, there is no risk of doing that.
And hockey skates are lighter (in weight), so you can practice longer before fatigue sets in.

What are hockey skates best shaped for?

The skates are shaped to perform maneuvers and quick reflex movements such as:

  • Starting fast - being explosive to chase the opponent
  • Stopping fast, scraping the flat part of the blade over the ice surface
  • Turning fast / changing direction - the puck flies all across the rink and you have to change directions very quickly.

Which skates to buy for beginners?

Based on all the explanations above, I hope you have been able to decide on your type of skates.

How to take care of your skates

Irrespective of your choice between the two games, skates make up a vital part of the equipment of any player and are required to be serviced regularly in order to be in tip top condition at all times:

  • Make sure the blades get sharpened regularly,
  • Wear skate guards whenever walking off the ice,
  • Dry your blades thoroughly after practice,
  • Inside the bag, protect your blades with soakers,
  • Once at home, take your skates out of the bag to dry,
  • Carry your skates in a bag to protect them.

You can find all my tips to take care of your skates in this article.

Figure skates vs hockey skates - FAQs

Is it easier to skate in figure or hockey skates?

Figure skates are generally consider easier to skate in for beginners because the shape of the blade distributes weight more evenly over the foot and the skater has more balance. over the foot, making it easier to balance.

Can you figure skate with hockey skates?

No.
You can manage basic figure skating moves with hockey skates. However, since the blade is completely different (curve, toe picks...), you cannot reproduce figure skating moves with hockey skates.

Are figure skates good for beginners?

Absolutely. Figure skates offer great balance, compared to other types of skates, which is best for beginners. The skaters feels more confidence.

Which is harder hockey or figure skating?

There is no right answer here. Both sports have difficulties and require a lot of practice to master.
They are so different, it is impossible to compare. They just have the ice rink in common.
However, in terms of difficulty of skating, figure skating is harder considering the variety of moves required.

Are figure skaters faster than hockey players?

That is a fight often discussed between teens.
On a short race (or burst of skating link in playing hockey), hockey skates have the advantage.
However, if skating for a longer time, the length of the strides the figure skaters create would prove and advantage.
But all of them will be beaten by the speed skater anyway.

Ice skating equipment - 10 Essentials

#1 - Ice skates with good fit

Of course, the first thing you need are ice skates. No surprise here.
But make sure they are suitable for your level and fit your feet well.

  • Length: when standing, is the foot flat in the skate. Are the toes free to wiggle a little?
  • Width: when standing, is the curvature of the sole matching the arch of your foot.  Do your feet feel supported?  (different brands have different fit)
  • Heel: is the heel of your foot well seated in the heel area?
  • Ankle: does the skate fit well the ankle?

#2 - Appropriate socks

Many people are scared their feet will be cold when ice-skating, so they want to use thick socks.
However, the thinner the socks the better. At high level, some skater even skate barefoot because socks cause friction. With thin socks, you can feel your sole better and control pressure to control your movement.
If you choose to wear socks (like I did), you have to choose some that will minimize rubbing (avoid seams).
So choose socks that are thin and high above the boot but avoid entirely polyester socks. Or you can wear tights.

#3 - Ice skating bag

I know in movies and pictures, cool girls seem to be wearing their skates on their shoulder using laces attached together. This is a really bad idea. Please, do not to this. You will damage your laces, your skates and your clothes as everything bangs together.
You should carry your skates in a bag, if possible, with aeration.

See my article to help you choose your ice skating bag.

#4 - Skate guards

It is absolutely critical to have a pair of skate guards. As soon as you get off the ice, you should protect your blades with the guards.
The smallest impact on your blade means that you can't skate anymore, and you would have to buy new ones. The blades are only supposed to be on the ice.
However, wear the guards only to walk around. Don't leave them on the skates once removed from your feet!
Check out my article to help you choose the best figure skate guards.
There are 2 main types of guards: the centipede /latch (often preferred by beginners as it is easier to set up) or the Universal / Spring (for more stability and protection when walking with your skates).

#5 - Absorbent cloth or Towel

You should always have something to dry your blades and mounting surfaces after a practice. It is mandatory.
If you don't want rust to appear on your blades, you have to spend some time drying them thoroughly before packing them. I even recommend drying once, then waiting while you change and drying them again as condensation will have formed if you enter a warmer room.

The cloth should be gentle and absorbent - Good options are microfiber towel, chamois cloth, terry cloth.

Below are some original options below that you can personalize - they are a great gift idea for figure skaters!
I have one myself, and they are very absorbent. Love them!

#6 - Skate soakers

When packed in a bag, your skates should not be left unprotected (as the blades will get damaged) and should not be protected by the guards as they will keep moisture and rust will appear.
In the bag, your blade should be covered with skate soakers that will keep absorbing humidity. They are also a non-negotiable figure skating equipment.

#7 - Appropriate clothing

What is good clothing for ice skating?

  • layers - (top, jackets, gloves...) that you can add or remove as your practice progresses - make sure you wear a jacket after practice. You will have been sweating and the rink is cold, so make sure you keep warm.
  • flexible - jeans are not a good option. You need to have a good amplitude of movement.
  • water reaction - the other reason jeans are not a good idea is that once wet, they hold the water and freeze. It is not enjoyable. Wear clothes that dry fast
  • form fitted - if you are not a leisure skater but being coached, your coach will need to see your lines and how your knees are bending. Therefore, you should not be wearing large clothes. Do not choose snow pants!!!!

#8 - Gloves

When practicing, gloves are a good idea. Some skaters may not enjoy them, but most do appreciate the warmth and the protection when falling.
Do not pick thick gloves as they will prevent you from grabbing your skate in some moves.
You should pick gloves that are thin, warm and dry fast.
You can even find gloves with incorporated pads to protect hand and wrist when falling (however, those cannot be used when pair skating).

Check out my article about ice skating gloves.

#9 - Water bottle

It is essential to keep hydrated during ice skating practice, for your health and your performance. You should always bring a bottle of water to the rink.

#10 - Tissues

Ice rinks are cold. But you are moving, and wind is blowing on your face. Therefore, most skaters have runny noses.
Pack facial tissues in your skate bag.

5 extra pieces of figure skating equipment to consider

#11 - Spare laces

Laces get worn down far quicker than you will expect. As you tie and untie, the laces rub against the boot until they break.
And you don't see it coming.

Just one day, you are lacing as usual and half the lace stays in your hand. The worse is when it happens in competition... Trust me, it is not fun.
To avoid any drama, always have an extra pair of laces in your bag!

Skate laces (many colors available)
Get them on Amazon

#12 - Lace tightener

I am not a big fan of lace tightener. I prefer using my fingers, I think I have more strength and can adapt more easily to what I feel.
However I also know a lot of people who love using them. They are useful especially when you have dry hands and the laces are hurting you.

Get it on Amazon

#13 - Boot covers

Boot covers come in and out of fashion.
But one thing is sure, if you want to keep your skates clean and limit cuts and black marks, wearing a boot cover is the best option.
They come in different colors, however I would avoid bright colors as it is a distraction for the coach looking at the form of the movement. I once had a coach make me go out of the rink and remove my neon yellow covers...
Learn more about ice skate boot covers.

#14 - Spare hair band

As you move and practice and sweat... you will have to tighten and re-tighten your hair. Hair bands end up braking and you don't want to finish the session with your hair floating in every direction.
Always carry spare hair bands. Maybe you can gather all the small items in a little bag inside your big bag to find them easily.

#15 - Pads

If you are at a level for which you are practicing a lot of jumps, it could be a good idea to wear protective gear.
Pads with foam or gel cushions reduce or eliminate shocks, pressure and rubbing.

You can protect your wrists, elbows, knees, hips and butt... Check out my article about the best figure skating crash pads and protective gear.

Good accessories to have in your figure skating bag

#16 - First aid - Bandages & pain medication

Classic for any sport. It is a good idea to carry the basics such as bandages and pain medication. Gels for bruises and muscle pain are also a good idea.
If you suffer from asthma, make certain you have your medications and that your coach knows where they are.

You can put them in a nice zipper pouch:

#18 - Healthy snack

And something to eat after practice. I was always starving after skating!

For competition - figure skating accessories to bring with you

You can find them also in my figure skating competition checklists.

Dresses / Costumes / pairs of tights

I don't want to repeat things. Most practice figure skating equipment must also be taken to a competition, especially your skates (don't laugh, I still have a very strong memory of another ice skater crying on the parking lot of a rink because she had forgotten her skates...).
But you also have to bring your special competition clothes: tights and dresses / costumes.

Make sure you bring several pairs of tights as they tend to get damaged.

See options on Amazon

See options on Amazon

Small sewing kit with extra safety pins.

Skating costumes incidents happen quite frequently. I remember another friend whose dress attached behind her neck but the button snapped and.. you can imagine.
So, always carry a sewing kit and safety pins to fix any issue.
And I also recommend carrying clear nail polish to stop any runs in your tights (in case there is not enough time to change them).

Hair and Make-up

And don't forget all you need to do your hair and make-up. I recommend having a vanity bag that is dedicated to competitions. It carries all the items your need so that you never worry about missing something.
One with a mirror is a good idea, as there is little space for many competitors.

Copy of your music

Always have a copy of your music with you to practice off ice but also to give to the competition organizer in case something is wrong with the first recording.

Something to keep busy while waiting

With all the different levels, competitions can be quite long, and you are on the ice only for a few minutes. You have to keep busy the rest of the time.

What is Ice hockey?

Ice hockey is a product of Canada, a fact which does not find favour with some critics. Though this extremely fast game was first played in Montreal in 1875, research reveals that a match was possibly played in Britain as early as 1790. Regardless of which country claims the right of fame to its inception, the fact is that the sport has steadily gained popularity in many countries around the world.

Ice hockey game

How is it played?

The game of ice hockey is played between two teams, each having six players, wearing ice skates and who compete in an ice rink. The object is to use the speed and agility to propel the puck into the opponent's goal and past the goalkeeper. The game is a popular Olympic sport and is embraced by over a million enthusiasts from all corners of the planet.

Brief history of Hockey

Ice hockey has been around for a long time, but the major sporting tournaments started somewhere in the mid 1880's. The word hockey has been linked to the French word, hoquet, meaning a shepherd's stick.

The first use of the puck was recorded in Ontario, Canada in the 1860's, while the first rules came to force in 1887 in the Montreal Gazette and eventually the Amateur Hockey Federation of Canada was formed in 1888. The Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley of Preston donated the first trophy in 1893 to the winning team of the Montreal Athletic Association, now popularly known as the Stanley Cup.

The National Hockey League (NHL), known as the most powerful league in the world was established in 1917 in North America with six teams. These were later expanded to 12 teams in 1967. In 1972 a new 12 team association known as World Hockey Association (WHA) was formed.

It started as a men sport.

The skates to play hockey

The ice skates to play hockey are very different from the figure skates or the speed skates.

Hockey skates are built to turn, stop, and accelerate quickly.

  • It has a rigid boot. It is typically made of a synthetic material such as plastic. It is designed to protect the feet from the hard puck, sticks, and from other players' skates.
  • The blade attaches to the boot through a plastic holder
  • The blades does not have toe picks. It is rounded at the front and in the rear.

Figure skating only requires skates. However, to play hockey you need other pieces of equipment. Almost all them, are the same, whether used by amateurs or professionals.

Ice hockey skates

The rubber pucks

The goal is to push the puck inside the goal. The hockey rubber puck is one inch thick and three inches in diameter, it weighs between 5.5 and 6 ounces.
It is made of black vulcanized rubber. Learn more about the puck in this article.

The hockey sticks

You push the rubber with a stick. Hockey sticks are made from wood and graphite.
The dimensions vary from player to player depending on height. However, the goalie's stick has a wider blade to enable him to block the puck.

Basic rules of the game

The exciting game of ice hockey is simple to understand once you gain knowledge of some of the basic rules. Some of the essential elements of the game are as follows.

The rink

The ice field on which the game is played is known as the 'rink'. It is divided into three colored zones. A red line divides the centre of the rink and two blue lines are drawn on either side of the neutral zone at 60'.
Standard size of a rink is 85' x 200'.

Ice hockey rink

The teams and positions

Each team consists of one goalkeeper and five players. There are 3 main positions:

  • The goalies protecting the goal. The player rarely leaves the net
  • The forwards - a 3-person line responsible for most of the goals. They also play defense when the opposing team is attacking
  • The defensemen - 2 players staying behind the forwards on either side to help defend the goal.

They initially stand in their allotted position like, defense or forward but then can move anywhere. However, the goalie can't cross the red line.
Unlimited substitutions are allowed anytime.
Learn more on my article explaining the 6 positions in Ice Hockey.

The goal

Whilst you can't touch the puck with your hands, you can move it around with the hockey stick or the feet.
Goals are scored by using the hockey stick to put the puck inside an opponent's net, even if it is deflected off the body of another player.

Ice hockey goal

The game

The game is played in three sessions of twenty minutes each.

The game begins with a faceoff when the referee puts the puck between two opposing forwards. After any stoppage time faceoff is adopted. There are nine spots from where the faceoff can take place.

When a player is in possession of the puck, he can be body checked by an opposing player, except on the head or when facing the boards. Setting up a scoring chance by body checking in the offensive zone is called 'forechecking'.

The penalties

Minor penalty: two minutes off or till a goal is scored by the opposing team, with no substitution allowed.
Major penalty: off the field for five minutes or ejected from the game if seriously injuring an opponent.

Hockey Playbook

How to start playing?

A majority of people consider ice hockey linked to ice skating. Learning to play hockey and to skate is a different proposition all together.
Ice hockey is a fast and tough sport. No matter which part of the world you are in there is a league which will fit your abilities - be it for beginners or pros alike. The game is a part of the heritage of Canada and nothing compares to the atmosphere of the NHL playoffs.
Learning to play hockey has a lot of benefits: physical, mental and social. Learn more on this article.
There are different parts of the games you have to learn:

Learn to skate

Purchase skates with a good fit. Have the blades sharpened and start gliding.
Join some coaching classes at the local rink that are geared towards ice hockey.

Check out my article about the best hockey skates for kids

Learn to control the rubber with the stick

  • Opt for a stick with a flat curve to start with as it allows you to use the side of your hand which you are most comfortable with.
  • Cut the stick to suit your size by putting the shaft to your nose and cutting it from there.
  • Tape a white tape on the blade and a black tape on the butt for better control during play.

The different levels in ice hockey in North America?

The strongest professional hockey system is based in North America. Here is a rundown of how these levels stack up:

Professional ice hockey

Hunter Kahn / CC BY-SA

  • National Hockey League (NHL) - a total of 30 teams with the USA having 23 and Canada 7.
The headquarters which controls all the best teams is based in New York.
  • American Hockey League (AHL) - Total 30 teams, 26 in the USA and 4 in Canada. This sole minor league in North America, has the maximum number of players contracted to the lucrative NHL.
The head office of the league is in Springfield, Massachussets and operates on a franchise system similar to the NHL. The level of talent is however comparable to Swiss NLA or Finland's SM league.
  • ECHL - 20 teams all based in the US all made up of players from Canada and America.
Head office is in Princeton, NJ
  • Central Hockey League (CHL) - Total of 15 US based teams located in Tempe, Arizona.
This league introduced hockey to Texas in the 1990's but has since extended to Indiana and South Dakota.
  • United States Hockey League (USHL) - Prime league to feed the college circuit consisting of high-quality junior level players. Total teams 28.
  • Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) - Has teams in every province except Newfoundland. Though not an affiliated body, it attracts players from round the world hoping to get access to the pro league.
  • National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) - Scattered throughout America, this league is a talent hunter for competitive hockey players.

Why do you need a bag?

There are a lot of pictures around the Internet with people carrying they skates around their neck or on the shoulder.
This is a really bad idea because:

  • The friction of the laces against your training clothes will damage them even faster
  • The hooks of the skates will get stuck and damage your clothes
  • You can bump your skate against something and damage it
  • And if it is like on the picture below, you can cut yourself with the blades!!!! Or damage the blade as well
  • After skating, the inside of your skate does not smell good. You don't want that close to your face!

It is one of the 10 essential pieces of figure skating equipment - see my list and it is also a great figure skating gift idea!

Criteria to choose your figure skating bag

You need a bag to carry your skate safely.
Here are the different criteria you should consider

1. The shape of the bag

A lot of bags have the shape of a triangle to fit the ice skates. Is it a good idea?
Well, it is not a bad idea, but it is not necessary. You are carrying other things in your bag such as clothes, a water bottle, a towel... So, you want a bit more space than just for your skates.
Think about all you want to transport in your bag and choose one that can hold all.

2. How you will carry the bag - backpack, shoulder bag, wheels

The next question is about transport. Once you have everything inside the bag it can be a little heavy. Carrying it on one shoulder is not good for your back.
You will find backpack options as well as bags with wheels for easier transportation.

3. The framing for protection

Check out how the bag holds itself when empty - is there a good framing, is the material thick enough.
The better it stands on its own, the more it will protect your skates.

4. The ventilation

If your skates stay a long time inside the bag, then it is better to choose a bag with an aeration grid (mesh), so that the air flows inside and moisture does not stay.
However, it is always better to take them out of the bag as soon as possible so that they dry. Make sure you read my article about how to take care of your skates.

The various options - pros and cons

In this section, I am introducing the various options for you to choose from. And I share the pros and cons of each so that you can take an informed decision.

Top choices - Ventilated options

  • PROS - Special pockets for the skates + backpack + mesh for aeration + not too big
  • CONS - if you are carrying in the rain, skates can get wet + limited space for other items

How to personalize your ice-skating bag

If you don't want to have the same bag as everyone around you, you could personalize it to your taste.

    Easy personalization

The easiest thing to do is to attach personalized elements to parts of the bag.
You can add keychains or luggage tags where you have your name on.

Ice skating essentials to have in the bag

Now let's what you should carry in that ice skating bag!
More tips in my article about the essentials pieces of figure skating equipment to carry in your bag.

    To get ready to skate

    1. A good pair of ice skates with sharpened blades - it may sound obvious, but you need to choose the right ones for the size and the level of skating
    2. A good pair of socks (not too thick) - your feet won't be cold. If the socks are too thick the feet cannot move and feel the movement as well - they should be high enough. Don't wear socks that stop right at the limit of the skate, it will be painful due to friction.
    3. Appropriate clothing with gloves

    Get them on Amazon

    When you skate

    1. Blade guards to walk with your skates around the rink - the blades are made for the ice, not for other material. Trust me, you don't want to damage them! Learn more
    2. A water bottle full of water to stay hydrated
    3. Tissues - with the cold and the air, the nose has a tendency to run...

For after skating or in case

    1. An absorbent towel or a leather cloth to dry your blades at the end - this is essential to avoid rust forming of them
    2. Blade soakers - to finish drying your blades and protect them inside the bag
    3. Spare laces - Laces are being torn and twisted and frictioned all the time. At the end they break, and it is annoying. You should always carry a pair of spare laces in your bag for when that happens

    FAQs

What do you carry your ice skates in?

Skates should be carried in a bag with support frame so that they are protected. It is even better if the bag has aeration.
Whatever the bag, the first thing when getting home is to get the the skates out of the bag from them to dry properly.

    How do you store ice-skates?

During the off season, when the ice-rink is closed, you should properly store your ice skates.
The most important is to protect them from potential animals and from humidity.
Your ice skating bag with aeration, once the skates are dry can work. Or in a cupboard with a tissu around (such as a towel).
Avoid plastic bins which trap the humidity.

How do I protect my skates?

The main actions to protect your skates on and off the ice are:

    • Carry your skates in a bag
    • Place a tissue or a tissu blade soakers on the blades when off the ice and off your feet
    • Use blade guards on your blades to walk to the ice
    • Wear boot cover to limit damage to your boots from the blades and friction

All you need to plan an ice skating birthday party (ideas + tips)

Are you planning an ice skating birthday party? I have gathered all my suggestions and ideas in this article: invitation, supplies, decors, food & activities suggestions... for a party at the rink or with just the ice skating theme but off the ice. Have fun!

Note this is for a figure skating party or ice dancing party - another article will be published for a hockey birthday.

1 - Location - where to have an ice skating theme party

    You can have either:

    • an ice skating party at the rink
    • or an ice skating themed party on a lawn somewhere

    At the rink

Many public ice skating rinks offer packages for birthday parties. Otherwise you can inquire about renting for a private party.
Some of them will also give you access to a private room where you can serve food.
If you choose this option, make sure you write on the invitation for kids to bring gloves and warm clothes. And make sure you have enough people good on their skates to manage the kids.

    Off ice

But you can also have a great ice skating birthday without the ice. There is a lot of logistics to take care with all the kids at the rink. So, it might be easier off-ice.
All the decors and activities can be related to ice skating. A lot of the kids will enjoy it more as they will be more confident on the ground. Interactions should be easier.
This is the moment to be creative! And I am going to help you in this article.

    Ice show

Another option is to take a few kids to an ice skating show and then enjoy a public session at the rink.

Note: if you are looking for ice skating gift ideas, check out my 50+ idea list article!

2 - Invitation - personalize your ice skating birthday party card

Once you have the location booked for a special date, you can create the invitation.
You can create it from scratch with a picture of your kid ice skating, or you can consider all these great pre-created templates where you can update the information with the name, age, date, location...
A lot of people have had imagination to create cute or modern invitation. I have selected a few of them for you, so have a look:

3 - Decor - Figure skating party ideas

Now let's talk decoration. If it is at the rink, you will not be able to decorate much unless you have a private room as well.
But if it is off the ice, this is when you can let your imagination run wild to decorate.

    Balloons, pillows

And you will also have the supplies that we will see in the next step.

    Temporary decorations

Let's start with balloons and other decorations that you can create specifically for the occasion, and that you can personalize:

5 - Food - Ice skating party ideas for food

Whether you are at the rink or off the ice, you will have to provide food if you are hosting yourself.

You don't have to be creative here. You can stay with typical food that children love.
The cake is where you can bring the ice skating theme as a decor.
Here are a few items you can use on your cake:

    6 - Games and activities - let's have fun!

    Games on the ice

If your party is at the rink, you can break the free skating time with a few games:

    • Freeze skate - the kids are skating with a music, and when the music stops, they must freeze (which is a lot harder when skating than on the ground). They are eliminated if they keep moving.
    • Ice skating races - individual or with a relay
    • Ice skating obstacle course - you can set up cones, hoops and bars where kids have to step over or turn around
    • Skate chain / Conga line - kids form a line with hands around the waist of the kid in front of them - the front skater will increasingly accelerate and take sharper turns.

Ice skating games off the ice

You can either find games with ice skating theme on them, on imagine ice-skating pretend games:

    • If you have a trampoline, they can practice jumps over 1 turn
    • Or you can also practice jumps just on a flat surface - try to turn as much as possible
    • Do some roller skating
    • Practice balance - by standing on one foot in different positions (increase the difficulty as the game progresses - flamingo, arabesque, sitting spin position...) - the first one to fall or put the foot down looses
    • Slide board - You can also purchase a practice equipment that your ice skater can later use: a slide board - kids can first have fun sliding from side to side
    • or they can simply play cards or enjoy a puzzle with the ice skating theme. Below are some examples
