How to clean hockey equipment - 12 General rules

In this article,  I will get into more details on how to clean each piece of equipment as the process is different.
But overall, here are the rules you should keep in mind:

How often should you wash hockey gear

  1. Soft gear like jerseys, socks, base layers, etc., must be washed before every use.
  2. Hard gear or protective gear must be washed at least once a month.
  3. Helmets and skates should be cleaned regularly
  4. Develop a pre-use and post-use ritual and allocate time for it. Never rush the process, as not giving proper time to look after your gear is the quickest way to damage it.

How to clean and dry hockey gear

  1. It is best to use cold water to clean hockey equipment as the equipment is not built to withstand heat and can get instantly damaged.
  2. You can clean most hockey gear using your washing machine, sink, or bathtub
  3. Helmets, skates, blocker and trapper can’t be washed like other gear in a bathtub or a washing machine - no soaking!
  4. Before throwing your gear in the washing machine, close the velcros to avoid snagging and damaging other equipment.
  5. Bleach should be strictly avoided when washing hockey gear.
  6. Don't overload the washer
  7. It is best to use a hockey equipment drying rack to dry out hockey gear. Always hang or place the gear in their dedicated spaces. For gloves, it is best to use a glove drying rack.
  8. Hockey gear must be air-dried. The use of a dryer should be avoided as the dryer uses heat that can damage hockey gear.
cleaning hockey equipment

How to reduce the "rink stink"

  1. Wear base layers to create a moisture barrier
  2. Wipe down the inside and outside of all your pieces of equipment as soon as possible after practice - this include the bag
  3. Consider vinegar as a natural odor neutralizer - Combine a teaspoon of vinegar with 2 cups of water in a spray bottle then lightly mist the air. It smells vinegary at first (of course) but dries leaving no bad smells or vinegar scent.
  4. Dry all your equipment out

How to dry hockey equipment

Drying hockey equipment the right way is critical. Improper drying can result in damage and shorten the equipment's life.

Here are a few general rules to follow when drying out hockey equipment:

  • Dry out hockey equipment after every use
  • Dry the equipment in a well-ventilated space that’s airy and dry
  • Use a drying rack to dry the equipment for all-round ventilation
  • If using a drying rack is not feasible due to limited space, hang out all the gear in a well-ventilated area.
  • Use a table fan for quick drying.
  • Avoid using heat to dry out gear that uses pads, gels, and foam.
  • Use a dryer to dry only soft equipment like jerseys, socks, etc.
  • Do not put gloves, shin pads, and other hard equipment in the dryer.

How to store hockey equipment

Cleaning, drying, and storing hockey equipment are all critical aspects of ensuring the longevity of your hockey gear.
There are a few rules for storing hockey equipment between practice sessions or during the off-season.

How to store hockey equipment between practice sessions:

  • After every hockey practice session, take out all the equipment. Wipe, clean, and dry the equipment thoroughly.
  • Wipe the hockey equipment bag and dry it out completely. If required, let the bag dry out inside out.
  • After all the equipment is completely dry, store it inside the hockey equipment bag.
  • Store all the gear in their dedicated area. In the case of a hockey duffle bag, store the gear you wear at the end at the very bottom and the gear that you put on first at the top.
  • Store your skates in the dedicated skate compartment inside your hockey bag or store them separately in a skate bag.
  • Store your stick in a stick bag
  • Keep the hockey bag with the equipment stored in it closed when not in use to prevent unwanted rodents and pests from entering.
  • Always store the hockey equipment bag in a well-ventilated, dry area. Avoid storing the bag in humid, wet conditions as it can result in the development of mold or a musty smell.

How to store hockey equipment during the off-season:

A major reason for the development of mold and long-term damage to hockey gear is improper gear storage during the off-season. Hockey equipment that’s not stored properly during the off-season can result in mold development, deterioration of pads, and the growth of a musty smell that’s hard to get rid of.

That’s precisely why you must follow the below rules when storing hockey equipment that’s not likely to be put to use for months together.
Never leave your hockey equipment in the hockey bag without cleaning and drying out the gear completely.

  • For long-term storage, choose a storage area
    • that’s preferably out of the way and not like a garage or a dedicated gear closet.
    • That’s well ventilated and dry
    • That does not get damp at all
    • That will keep your gear safe from bugs, rodents, and insects.
  • Do not store your hockey gear in your hockey bag during the off-season. (However, if you have space restrictions and need to keep your gear in the bag, check it every few months for dampness or other damage)
  • Before storing hockey gear, always purge old, damaged, and broken equipment.
  • Store hockey gear neatly in individual spaces for each type of equipment. Hang all your gear neatly (if you have space restrictions) or store them in category-wise bins and boxes.

Now, you will find specific tips on how to wash hockey equipment. A detailed explanation of how to wash hockey gear is given for each individual type of gear.

How to clean hockey gloves

Gloves are one of the smelliest hockey equipment and the trickiest to clean because of the different elements that make up a glove.
The leather, padding, and outer fabric are all susceptible to damage, tearing, and cracking if not handled properly.

Here are a few tips on how to clean hockey gloves:

how to clean hockey gloves

Cleaning hockey gloves without washing

If you do not have the time, skill, or the patience to wash hockey gloves properly, you can quickly make the gloves feel clean and dry by following the process below:

  • Wipe dry the gloves completely after use.
  • Spray a gentle deodorizer on the inside and outside of the gloves.
  • Let the gloves air dry completely. Make sure you dry them with the palms facing up or out. If possible, use a dedicated glove drying rack for this.

Machine washing hockey gloves:

To machine-wash gloves:

  • Close the velcros before putting the gloves in the machine
  • Put the gloves on a cold cycle.
  • Add a laundry booster or antibacterial and a detergent - but make sure there is no bleach in the ingredients
  • Wash for any cycle between 30-60 minutes
  • It is safe to put the gloves through the spin cycle.

Hand washing hockey gloves

  • Fill a bathtub or a large bucket with cold to lukewarm water, detergent, laundry booster, or antibacterial - but make sure there is no bleach in the ingredients
  • Let the gloves soak for at least 15 minutes.
  • Rinse off extra water

How to dry hockey gloves

  • Air dry hockey gloves - do not use a dryer
  • Use a gloves drying rack or a hockey equipment rack, if possible.
  • Make sure that the palms stay face up while drying.
  • Ensure proper airflow inside the gloves
  • Use a house fan to accelerate the drying process

What to avoid when cleaning gloves

  • Avoid using hot water when cleaning gloves as it can damage the palms.
  • Avoid using heating devices like a hairdryer or dryer to dry out gloves.
  • Avoid placing the palms facing down when drying.
  • When drying gloves, do not place the gloves on any heated or hot surfaces.
  • Avoid using bleach when washing gloves.
  • Never keep the velcros open when washing gloves with other gear as it can snag and tear soft gear like jerseys and socks or damage other equipment material
  • Don’t overload the machine.

How to clean hockey pants

Washing hockey pants is a relatively straightforward process.

how to clean hockey pants

But there are still some process rules to follow.

  • Always dry hockey pants after every use
  • Put the pants in the machine along with other soft equipment like jerseys, socks, under armor.
  • Add detergent, laundry booster, and any antibacterial.
  • If the pants are particularly stinky, let them soak for at least 15 minutes.
  • Add vinegar to remove the stinky odor
  • Run a gentle wash cycle
  • Hang them on a clothesline for air-drying. Alternatively, use a hockey equipment drying rack to dry out the pants

When washing hockey pants, some points to remember are:

  • Never use bleach or any detergent with a bleaching agent (especially when washing hockey pants with other gear)
  • Check manufacturer’s instructions for any special care requirements

How to clean hockey pads (shoulder, shin and elbow pads)

Hockey pads, or, more specifically, hockey shoulder pads, shin pads, or elbow pads, are the protective gear used in ice hockey.
It is recommended to wash all protective gear once a month if you use it regularly.

how to clean hockey pads

How to clean shoulder pads, shin pads, and elbow pads without washing:

Since you do not wash protective gear frequently, it is essential to keep it clean between washes to prevent accumulation of dirt, bacteria, and foul odor by:

  • Taking out all the gear from the bag between two sessions
  • Letting the gear air dry completely before every use. You can invest in a hockey gear drying rack to ensure proper all-round drying.
  • Spraying a gentle deodorizer on the gear to prevent a build-up of bad odor.

How to wash shoulder pads, shin pads, and elbow pads:

  • Fill up a bathtub with lukewarm water.
  • Add your favorite detergent, laundry booster, and antimicrobial - but make sure there is no bleach in the ingredients
  • Ensure that all the add-ons mix properly with water. You may have to wait for about 10 minutes for the mixture to blend evenly.
  • Soak your shoulder pads, shin pads, and elbow pads for about 30-60 minutes.
  • Drain the tub and wash off excess detergent using normal water.

Many players also use a washing machine to wash their protective gear. If using a machine, remember to run it on a cold or lukewarm cycle of about 3-60 minutes. Do not overfill the washing machine. Leave enough room for the gear to move freely to achieve proper cleaning.

How to dry shoulder pads, shin pads, and elbow pads

  • To dry protective gear, it is best to use a drying rack
  • If a drying rack is not available, lay all the gear on a flat surface or hang them up neatly.
  • Let the gear dry out completely. Ensure that the padding on the inside also dries fully.
  • To accelerate the drying process, use a house fan only. Do not use a heating dryer or any heated surface as this could damage the padding completely.

How to clean a hockey helmet

A helmet is one of the sweatiest of all hockey equipment. It breeds bacteria and is often a cause of forehead skin allergies and irritation.
Therefore keeping the helmet clean, dry, and bacteria-free (as far as possible) is of utmost importance.

how to clean hockey helmet

How to wash a hockey helmet

  • Take mild shampoo, baby shampoo, or mild dish soap in a bowl.
  • Add lukewarm water to it.
  • Gently dip a sponge in the mixture and remove excess water.
  • Clean the inside of the helmet thoroughly using this mixture
  • Clean it using a scrubbing action. Dip the sponge in the soap and water mixture as many times as required to thoroughly eliminate all grime, dirt, and other sticky accumulations.
  • Rinse off the soapy mixture from the inside of the helmet using a sponge dipped in clean, lukewarm water.
  • Repeat the above steps to clean the outside of the helmet.

How to dry a hockey helmet

  • Wipe the inside and outside of a hockey helmet using a clean, dry towel/cloth
  • Ball up a towel and place it inside the helmet to absorb excess water
  • After the balled-up towel absorbs all the excess water, point a house fan in the direction of the helmet and let it air dry. Alternatively, you can simply leave the helmet on a drying rack in normal room temperature conditions.

Things to remember when cleaning a hockey helmet

  • Always clean the inside of the helmet before cleaning the outside of the helmet. If you use the same sponge used to clean the inside of the helmet to clean the outside, you could inadvertently transfer the dirt to the helmet's liner.
  • Never rinse off the helmet under running water.
  • Avoid using excessive heat to clean the helmet. Do not use hot water at any cost.
  • The helmet makes continuous contact with your hair and forehead. Therefore, using a bleaching agent or harsh detergent when cleaning the helmet should be absolutely avoided.
  • and let's be obvious: Do not use a substance that you are allergic to to clean the helmet

How to avoid frequent bacteria and odor build-up

Taking necessary steps to prevent bacteria and odor build-up will limit the number of times you need to wash the helmet.

To prevent bacteria and odor build-up:

  • Wear a helmet with vents for air circulation
  • Wear a layer of sweat-absorbent clothing between your helmet and your head or add a sweat liner
  • Dry out the helmet completely before every use

How to wash a hockey jersey

There is a lot of emotion attached to a hockey jersey. Therefore, it is essential to keep the jersey looking fresh and new. The lettering and the colors of the jersey should stay intact as long as possible.

how to clean hockey jersey

Thus follow the steps below to wash a hockey jersey:

  • Treat stains on a jersey with an anti-stain or vinegar. Gently wash pre-treated stains with a toothbrush and wash them off in cold water. Squeeze out the excess water and then throw the jersey in a washing machine
  • Throw a hockey jersey in the washing machine with similar jerseys. Avoid throwing in the jersey with other gear to protect it from snags, tears, cross coloration, and discoloration.
  • Throw the jersey inside out to protect its lettering and imprinted design.
  • Use a detergent with no bleach to avoid discoloration. Fabric softeners too dry out the lettering and logos and make the jersey feel rough when used.
  • Run a delicate cycle of cold water. Hot water will bake the imprinted design.
  • Immediately turn the jersey right side out after washing to prevent lettering and design from sticking to each other
  • Air-dry the jersey to increase its longevity.

Things to remember when washing a hockey jersey

  • Hockey jerseys are made for rough use in cold conditions. Overexposure to heat will damage the material.
  • Avoid using a dryer to prevent discoloration, shrinking, and other damage.
  • Never iron a jersey as it will cause lettering to crack

How to clean hockey skates

No matter what level of hockey you play and how expensive your hockey skates are, a lack of proper care will accelerate the speed of damage to hockey skates.

how to clean hockey skates

How to clean hockey skates after use

  • After use, wipe the blade with a dry absorbent towel or a leather cloth. Wait for a while, let the blades come to room temperature, and dry out the blades again to get rid of condensation.
  • Cover your blades with skater soakers while you carry them in your bag to continue the process of moisture absorption
  • After you reach home, take the skates out of the bag. Unlace the skates. Pull out the tongue and let the skates dry out completely.
  • If possible, take off the insoles and dry them out separately.
  • Spray an anti-bacterial spray on the skates. Alternatively, you could even spray some dry baking soda to keep the skates fresh and stink-free.

Things to remember when cleaning hockey skates

  • Always use a fresh, clean towel to wipe hockey skates.
  • Never leave a cleaning towel in the bag after use as it will get damp. Reusing a damp towel to clean the blades can cause rusting.
  • Clean the entire body of the skate and not just the metal parts and the blade.
  • Never wash your hockey skates in a bathtub or a washing machine.

Tips to avoid bacteria, rust, and odor damage of ice skates

  • Always dry out your skates completely after every use
  • Change laces regularly. Use high-quality laces as much as possible.
  • Always wear fresh, clean, moisture-wicking socks under skates to limit bacteria and odor build-up.
  • Change insoles regularly
  • During the off-season or for long-term storage, avoid storing skates in a humid, damp room or bag.

How to wash a hockey bag

A hockey bag can quickly become a bacteria breeding environment if it is not looked after properly.
Here are a few rules you must follow to ensure that your bag lasts long and doesn’t damage your equipment.

how to clean hockey equipment bag
  1. Always wipe all wet equipment before placing it in the bag
  2. Use skate pockets to store skates; otherwise, you run the risk of the blades cutting through the bag and the other gear
  3. Store wet/damp gear in mesh pockets to allow drying
  4. Wipe your bag regularly after use and in between sessions
  5. Store the bag properly in locker rooms and car boots. Ensure that the bag doesn’t get squished and that its structure stays intact.
  6. When not in use, empty the bag completely and let the inside of the bag air dry.
  7. After the bag dries out completely, zip it up and store it in a dry place. Moisture can damage bags, and bags left open can become home to unwanted rodents.

AIs synchronized skating an Olympic event?

Today, synchronized skating has been reviewed for Olympic eligibility, but it is not an Olympic sport.
Although it is growing very fast, synchro may never be part of the Olympics because:

  • The teams are huge - 20 skaters each which means high accommodation costs
  • It is difficult to televise: you don't realize the speed and difficulty via a screen
  • It is not popular is many parts of the World which limits the potential audience
  • There are not enough countries with teams when the Olympics is a contest between all nations around the world - at senior level, only around 20 countries have teams today

Figure skating nations are working on new models to be able to include synchronized skating at the Olympics.

Dominant nations in ice skating events at the Olympics

The most successful nations in terms of medals throughout the Figure skating Olympics history are:

  • USA - 53 medals including 16 gold
  • Russia - 60 medals including 30 gold (competing under Russian Empire, Soviet Union, Unified Team, Russian Federation, Olympic Athletes from Russia, & Russian Olympic Committee)

Dominant skaters

The most decorated skaters in the Olympics history of Figure skating are:

  • Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, ice dancers from Canada - they have a total a total of five medals including two golds in ice dance and one team event gold (2010 to 2018).
  • Gillis Grafstrom, a male figure skater from Sweden has had 4 medals including 3 gold ones (1920 to 1932)
  • Sonja Henie, a female figure skater from Norway, has earned 3 gold medals (1928 -1936)
  • Irina Rodnina, a pair figure skater from Soviet Union, has earned 3 gold medals (1972 -1980)

5 criteria to choose your hockey shoulder pads

In this section, I will break down all the basics associated with hockey shoulder pads. To begin with, I will talk about the elements of a hockey shoulder pad and then give insights on key factors that you must consider when buying hockey shoulder pads.

Elements of a hockey shoulder pad

Before I share the factors you should consider when buying hockey shoulder pads, it is important to understand their anatomy. The components of a hockey shoulder pad are as follows:

Ice hockey shoulder pad elements

Ice hockey shoulder pad - elements

  • Collar Bone Protector: The collar bone protector is the roundish part of the shoulder pad that sits right on top of the collar bone.
  • Shoulder Cap: The shoulder caps are roundish, pocketed compartments made to encompass the player’s shoulders. They are hard on the exteriors, and the interior areas are lightly padded for comfort and shock absorption.
  • Bicep Guard: The bicep guards or protectors are soft bicep covers loosely connected to the shoulder cap using an internal velcro strap.
  • Rib cage protector: The rib cage protector is a guard that sits on top of the ribs like a heavy jacket or a coat.
  • Abdominal pad: The abdominal cover or pad is attached to the lower end of the rib cage protector to cover the upper abdominal area.
  • Spine protector: Spine protector is the backside of the ice hockey shoulder pad area that runs from the neck all the way down to the waist area.
  • Velcro Straps: The velcro straps are placed on the lower end of the shoulder pads, below the rib cage, and over the abdominal pad. These are to be used to adjust the fit of the shoulder pad.

#1 - Weight

Most brands make both lightweight and heavier variants of shoulder pads. This is because some players prefer a lightweight shoulder pad, while some prefer the more bulky ones.

The basic rules with respect to weight are:

  • Heavier shoulder pads have more protective material
  • Lighter shoulder pads allow more freedom of movement
  • The weight of the shoulder pad alone does not guarantee protection. Protection depends on other factors like quality of material used, sizing, and fit as well.

Thus, you should buy a shoulder pad that feels right for your needs.

#2 - Material / Protection-level

Given that the shoulder pad, in essence, covers almost the entire upper body, a lot of material is used to make it.

Hard Molded plastic: This is used to ensure optimal protection and dissipate impacts. It is mainly used in:

  • Shoulder caps
  • As inserts in rib-cage protectors.

Foam: The primary source of padding in shoulder pads is provided by use of foam. The type of foam used - single density, multi-density, smart foam, will vary based on the price and brand. But the use of foam is seen

  • On the inside of shoulder caps
  • Bicep protectors
  • Sternum/Abdominal pads
  • On the side panels

Usually, the greater the density and thickness of padding, the better the protection. But lightweight models cut down on the weight by placing denser padding in key impact areas and lesser padding in other areas.

Therefore, greater importance must be given to the quality of the material used and not the quantity or thickness of the material.

Ice hockey shoulder pad protection

Comfort

To ensure that the shoulder pads you are opting for are comfortable, check the following:

  • Whether the liner is breathable: Breathable liners wick moisture away and keep you feeling dry for more comfort.
  • Whether the foam is removable: Removable foam in the belly region allows more adjustability and provides more comfort.
  • Whether the fit and sizing are proper: Buying the right-sized shoulder pads that fit well makes them far more comfortable than ill-fitting shoulder pads. (More on this below)

Size and Fit

Measuring:

  • Ask someone to measure your chest right below the armpits using a soft tape measure. (It is difficult to measure your chest yourself accurately.)
  • Note your height
  • Refer to the brand’s sizing chart and select a size that corresponds with your height and weight.

Checking the fit:

The shoulder pad consists of several elements that must align properly with your body in order for the fit to be perfect. To check if the fit of the shoulder pad is in order, make sure that:

  • the shoulder caps should lie squarely on top of your shoulders.
  • the bicep guards should stay on top of the biceps
  • there should be no gap between the bicep guards and elbow pads
  • the abdominal pad (if not removed) should almost touch the pants
  • the collar bone protector must fully cover the collar bones
  • The sternum protector or rib cage protector must feel comfortably snug
  • The spine protector must cover the spine and stay flat on top of it.

If the shoulder pads are too small, you will notice the following:

  • The outer part of the shoulder caps sits on top of the shoulder
  • The neckline feels too restrictive
  • There is a gap between the bicep guards and the elbow pads
  • There is a gap between the abdominal pad and the pants
  • There is hardly any room between the sternum protector and the player’s chest

If the shoulder pads are too big, you will notice the following:

  • The bicep guards overlap elbow pads
  • There is plenty of room between the sternum protector and the player’s chest.
  • The inner part of the shoulder cap sits on top of the shoulder
  • The collar bone is exposed
  • The shoulder pads move easily and keep shifting

As stated earlier, the protection provided by the shoulder pads depends heavily on a proper fit. Check sizing guidelines thoroughly and try out multiple shoulder pads to ensure a proper fit.

Ice hockey shoulder pad protection mobility

Price

The pricing of shoulder pads depends on the age group. Thus, youth shoulder pads are much cheaper than senior shoulder pads.

Here’s a rough guideline on what to expect from shoulder pads based exclusively on their price range:

Budget shoulder pads:

Budget shoulder pads have the following characteristics:

  • They use basic PE caps and single-layered or multiple layered basic foams
  • They rarely come with abdominal pads
  • The bicep guards are mostly not adjustable
  • The protection level is adequate for beginners or recreational players.

Mid-range shoulder pads:

Mid-range shoulder pads offer the most value for money and are highly recommended for players that regularly play the season. Their key characteristics are:

  • They integrate high-end materials like smart foams, etc.
  • They are usually not too lightweight or suitable for a specific player profile.
  • They offer excellent comfort and protection
  • They are more durable than top-end variants

Expensive shoulder pads:

Top-end shoulder pads have the following characteristics:

  • They use highly sophisticated technology and materials
  • They are designed to meet specific player requirements
  • They offer the best of comfort and protection
  • They are not as durable as lower-end variants

Brand

When buying ice hockey shoulder pads, it is best to opt for renowned ice hockey gear brands like Bauer, Warrior, CCM, and True.

However, when zeroing down on hockey shoulder pads, instead of taking decisions based on brand loyalty, it is best to rely on comfort and fit.

Best youth hockey shoulder pads - reviews

In this section, you will find information on the best shoulder pads for youth hockey players.

Pure Hockey PH1

Pros:

  • Cheap
  • Ideal for beginners
  • Good level of protection
  • Easy to wear
  • Durable

Cons:

  • Basic for advancing level of play
PURE HOCKEY PH1 youth hockey shoulder pads

Ideal for: Absolute beginners and those on a budget

The Pure Hockey PH1 Shoulder Pads come in an attractive design that appeals to young kids. Moreover, to make wearing it and taking it off easier, the design employs a thoughtful large neck opening.

For protection, it uses basic material that may not meet the requirements of advanced players but is more than enough for entry-level players. The shoulder caps use molded PE that is sturdy enough to repel high-intensity impacts. For the padding and the liner, the shoulder pads come with multi-layered foams.

Additionally, the sternum protector has also been enhanced using PE inserts. For young kids that are more prone to taking falls on their upper bodies, this addition of PE proves to be extremely beneficial.

In terms of comfort, the shoulder pads feel bulkier than higher-end models, but the added weight does not restrict the movement of beginners learning new skills.

Overall, these budget shoulder pads are an excellent starting point for young beginners.

Bauer Supreme 2S Pro

Pros:

  • Breathable for superior comfort
  • Provides excellent value for money

BAUER SUPREME 2S youth hockey shoulder pads

Ideal for: Intermediate to advanced players looking for all-round comfort and protection

The Bauer Supreme series is known for its superior blend of comfort and protection, and the Supreme 2s Pro is no exception to that rule.

These shoulder pads are extremely well-crafted in the sense that they use high-end function-specific padding materials.

Thus, for the shoulder caps, Bauer has used their top-end Thermo max liner for maximum protection and moisture-wicking. For the biceps, it has used molded PE foams for a more defined structure. The sternum and spine have been enhanced with MD foam.

Despite the excellent padding and protection all across their body, the shoulder pads retain a lightweight feel. The anatomical structure stays close to the player’s body without feeling suffocating, thanks to the moisture-wicking foam. Moreover, the design profile also allows ample movement to support a high level of play and quick movements.

To round up, the Bauer Supreme 2S Pro is an excellent choice for young players who prefer comfortable, lightweight shoulder pads that do not compromise on protection performance.

Warrior Alpha DX

Cons:

WARRIOR ALPHA DX youth hockey shoulder pads

The brand has used moisture-wicking mesh liner padding throughout the body and the back to prevent the sticky feeling of sweat build-up. In addition to this, the chest, spine, and biceps have also been beefed up with added protection.

However, the highlight of these shoulder pads is that despite being so protection-heavy, they feel super lightweight. The fit and comfort these shoulder pads offer are so superior that it takes no time for young players to get used to the pads and focus on their shotmaking.

This technology found in its higher variants makes it easy to move, and the overall feel of the shoulder pads also stays lightweight. The Flexcell liner further encourages full mobility.

Unless you are an elite-level player looking for anatomically fitting shoulder pads, these shoulder pads should serve you well for a long period.

CCM Tasks 9080 Senior

Pros

  • Customizable fit
  • Great value for money
  • Impressive protective features
  • Adequate breathability
  • Supports all levels of play

Cons:

  • Not as durable as others on this list
CCM TACKS 9080 senior hockey shoulder pads

Ideal for: Those looking for an all-round mid-range option

The CCM Tacks 9080 utilizes plenty of top-end features like the D3O foam, adjustable bicep guards, and floating spine coverage. They translate into better protection and superior comfort.
The D3O foam is renowned for being the most shock-resistant foam on the market. Thus, these shoulder pads, which use the D3O in their shoulder caps and sternum plate, nullify impacts almost instantly.

In addition to protecting the shoulder, sternum, and spine, the CCM tacks have also added protective layering over the kidney.

In terms of comfort, the chest and the spine area use a floating design that adjusts its body as per your movements. These shoulder pads excel thanks to their anatomical design and comfortable fit.

Thus, you will never feel restricted during play. This design, coupled with its mesh liner, guarantees a cool, dry feel throughout.

Even without employing top-of-the-line materials, CCM has designed an excellent product for those looking for complete protection at a mid-range price point.

Sher-wood 5030 HOF

Pros:

  • Basic but functional design
  • Budget-friendly
  • Perfect for recreational players
  • Good fit and lightweight feel

Cons:

  • Not suitable for players regularly taking classes or playing league games

SHER-WOOD 5030 senior hockey shoulder pads

Ideal for: Recreational players looking for basic shoulder pads

Let me say this right at the outset. These shoulder pads are not for players that practice regularly or play league matches during season time. These shoulder pads are for recreational players.

The design itself is pretty basic and old-school. It has more openings than modern-day hockey shoulder pads. It uses simple PE caps lined with foam underneath. The chest, back, and biceps all come in single-density foams strengthened with PE inserts.

What this means is that these shoulder pads offer decent protection for a relatively non-aggressive session of recreational hockey. The lacing closure in the front also makes the shoulder pads look attractive. But that said, you can’t use them for a highly competitive tournament where pucks will keep coming at you at a high velocity.

Best hockey shoulder pad for women - Reviews

In the recent past, many brands have introduced shoulder pads specifically designed for women. These shoulder pads, in essence, have more room in the front panel to accommodate a fuller chest. Check out the reviews below to know more about my favorites.

CCM Jetspeed FTW

Pros:

  • Fully adjustable fit to suit all body types
  • Excellent all-round protection
  • Provides great mobility
  • Durable
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Side-coverage takes some time to get used to
CCM JETSPEED FTW woman hockey shoulder pads

Ideal for: Women looking for affordable shoulder pads with a customizable fit.

The CCM Jetspeed FTW are excellent low-profile hockey shoulder pads.  Being women-specific shoulder pads, these shoulder pads allow you to fully adjust the chest panel to fit your specific body type.

To ensure that the chest adjustment does not create gaps between the abdominal pad and your pants, it also comes with an adjustable strap to customize the length of the shoulder pads. The belly padding is also removable for extra comfort.

In terms of protection, the shoulder caps use the premium D3O foam in key areas for delivering impressive impact absorption. It also fortifies protection in key impact areas using a hard molded shell.

The low-profile caps sit square on the shoulders and do not move at all, letting you take your shots freely. The bicep guards can also be placed at a height that sits exactly between the caps and the elbow pads to prevent any mobility restriction.

Thus, for women who feel restricted from wearing regular unisex shoulder pads, opting for these shoulder pads will prove to be a great relief.

Bauer Vapor X-W

Pros:

  • Excellent fit for women
  • Breathable and lightweight
  • Low profile for better mobility
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Length is not adjustable

BAUER VAPOR X-W woman hockey shoulder pads

Ideal for: Women who are Bauer loyalists and in need of women-specific shoulder pads

The Bauer Vapor X-W shoulder pads offer similar protection and comfort as those offered by the regular Vapor variants but with a fit tailored for women’s bodies.

The chest protector on these shoulder pads offers excellent coverage and prevents riding up the shoulder pads completely. The shoulder pads that come in a low profile stay close to the body at all times and deliver complete freedom of movement.

Thus, as a whole unit, these shoulder pads offer all-round protection, a lightweight feel, and great mobility for women hockey players.

Does it offer as much customization as the CCM Jetspeed FTW? Probably not, but the fit works well for most female body types.

How to take care of ice hockey shoulder pads?

Hockey shoulder pads are exposed to a lot of sweat and hence are often the biggest breeding ground for bacteria and bad odor. Thus, to prevent premature wear and tear of the shoulder guards and extend their lifespan, it is important to look after the shoulder pads properly. Here are some handy care tips for you-

Dry -

Drying out hockey equipment after every use is non-negotiable. Thus, make sure that you hang the shoulder pads for drying after every single use. You can even leave them on a gear stand. Do not wear shoulder pads unless completely dry.

Deodorize -

Regularly spray hockey gear deodorizer on the shoulder pads after every use to prevent bad odor.

Wash -

After every few uses, wash the shoulder pads. Soak them in a tub with a scoop of Oxyclean and rinse them off completely after a few hours.

Additional tips:

  • Wear a base layer under the shoulder pads to prevent direct contact with sweat. This will help extend the lifespan of your shoulder pads.
  • Inspect the shoulder pads thoroughly for any damages or wear and tear. Get any signs of damages inspected by a professional. Fix them immediately to prevent injuries.

Shoulder pads are not as susceptible to damages as hockey helmets or shin guards and can therefore easily last for a few years, provided you regularly take proper care of them.

About elbow pads

Why do you need elbow pads?

Elbow pads are one of the most important pieces of hockey gear. This is because they are responsible for keeping the arms of the players safe. They protect against:

  • Falls on the arms or elbows
  • Slashes
  • Hits

Buying wrong elbow pads can also interfere with free shotmaking due to lack of mobility, slipping of elbow pads, or ends of the elbow pads getting stuck in gloves.

Therefore, you must understand the composition of elbow pads and go through the buying advice below to determine which factors to give importance to when choosing elbow pads.

Elements of an elbow pad

An elbow pad consists of the following components:

Ice Hockey Elbow pad elements

Elements of your Hockey Elbow Pads

  • Forearm protection/guard: This is the long portion of the elbow that covers your forearm.
  • Slash protection: This is the outer part of the elbow pad meant to protect you against slashes.
  • Elbow cap: This is the cap or a round structure that covers the elbow.
  • Bicep protection/guard: This is the part that extends towards the biceps to meet the bicep protectors of your shoulder pads.
  • Inside arm: This is the internal side of the elbow pad that makes contact with your arm made using light padding material.

5 Criteria for choosing the best hockey elbow pads for you

#1 - Protection level

The level of protection delivered by elbow pads depends on the protective material built into them. The primary materials used in elbow pads are:

Plastic: Plastic is used in the elbow caps or plastic inserts in the forearm and bicep areas.
For optimal protection, you should not settle for elbow pads with:

  • No plastic shells
  • Thin plastic shells prone to cracks

It is best to opt for elbow pads with thicker plastic or mid-density PE foam.

Foam: Foam is heavily used in all hockey gear as the primary source of shock-absorbing material. For optimal protection, you should not settle for:

  • Single-density foam padding
  • Elbow pads that only rely on foam for protection with no use of plastic or plastic inserts.

It is best to buy elbow pads that come with mid-density, multi-layered foams. An even better option would be to buy elbow pads that use smart materials like D3O for protection.
In addition to this, the level of protection also depends on the size, fit, and coverage of the elbow pads. (More on this below)

Protect elbows playing ice hockey

#2 - Size and Fit

Size:

Elbow pads sizing guides reflect that elbow pads come in size bands and not absolute sizes. These size bands are often overlapping and can cause confusion.
To determine the right size of elbow pads for you, follow the steps given below:

  1. Extend your arm
  2. Take a measuring tape
  3. Measure the distance between your mid-forearm and mid-bicep
  4. Note this measurement down
  5. Note down your height
  6. Check the applicable brand-specific size chart
  7. Finally, opt for a size that matches both your arm measurement and size.

Fit:

Once you figure out what size elbow pad you should opt for, you should also ensure it fits properly.
Thus, a properly fitting elbow pad:

  • Has the elbow cap completely covering the elbow
  • There is no gap between the bicep protector on the elbow pad and the bicep protector on the shoulder pads.
  • There is barely any gap between the forearm protector and the glove.
  • The forearm is fully covered when the elbow pad is properly strapped.
  • The forearm protector does not interfere with the glove and restricts mobility.

A smaller elbow pad:

  • leaves uncovered spaces on the forearm
  • leaves gaps between the forearm and the gloves as well as between the bicep protectors and the shoulder pads.
  • restricts mobility

A bigger elbow pad:

  • brushes with or overlaps gloves and shoulder pads
  • Moves and slides with the movement of arms
Protect elbows playing ice hockey mobility

#3 - Weight

The weight of elbow pads depends entirely on the type of material used and the quantity of padding. However, more weight does not always equal better protection.
This is because higher-end elbow pads employ smart foams or material specifically designed to offer higher levels of protection while providing a lightweight feel.

What matters is the feel of the elbow pads when worn.

  • Do they feel too heavy for your arms?
  • Do they weigh down free movement?
  • Do they feel too flimsy?

If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, you should avoid buying those elbow pads.

#4 - Comfort

Elbow pad comfort depends on how cool and dry your arms feel when you wear them.

To supply a cool, dry feel, elbow pads use foam liners on the inside arm. These liners are made using thin absorbent foam or advanced moisture-wicking foams like Bauer’s Thermomax or CCM’s DryFoam liner that keep your arms free from the stickiness of moisture and sweat.

If you have the budget, it is best to opt for elbow pads that come with advanced moisture-wicking foams.

Protection elbow playing ice hockey

#5 - Price

The pricing of elbow pads varies based on size and brand. However, here are some broad rules about pricing and the corresponding quality of elbow pads:

Budget elbow pads:

  • Come for a price under $60
  • Use basic material like a thin plastic shell or single-density foam
  • Work only for recreational players or absolute beginners

Mid-range elbow pads:

  • Come for a price between $60 to $100
  • Use a mix of basic and advanced material
  • Offer great value for money with sufficient protection, comfort, and mobility
  • Suit almost all levels of play

Expensive elbow pads:

  • Come for a price above $100
  • Use smart materials and sophisticated technology
  • Offer superior protection, comfort, and mobility
  • Provide a highly customized fit
  • Suit only elite-level of play

Brand

The most popular brands making elbow pads are Bauer, CCM, and Warrior. These brands have variants specifically designed to meet different levels of play. Their quality and construction are excellent and are an ideal choice for players that practice and play matches regularly.

Brands like Sher-wood and Pure Hockey make elbow pads that are most suited only for absolute beginners and recreational players.

When deciding which elbow pads to buy, it is best to try out comparable elbow pads from all the leading brands and test them for their comfort and fit.

Cons:

  • One-piece construction may not provide a proper fit for everyone.
PURE HOCKEY PH1 youth hockey elbow pads

Ideal for: Absolute beginners looking for budget-friendly hockey elbow pads

The Pure Hockey PH1 Hockey Elbow Pads are designed to provide hassle-free elbow protection to kids starting out with ice hockey.

Thus, these elbow pads come in a one-piece construction, i.e., the bicep protector and the forearm protector are all joined to the elbow pad as a single unit. This means that you simply need to slide your arm through it and adjust the straps on the forearm to customize the fit.

The simplicity of these elbow pads can prove to be a huge relief for young kids who do not feel confident enough to handle sophisticated elbow pads with customizable fits.

In terms of protection, the multi-density foam is pretty shock absorbent and works well for the beginner level of play. The one-piece hard cap neutralizes impacts and protects against falls on the elbow, which are fairly common at the beginner stage.

Thus, these elbow pads are a great option for those looking for a basic but functional design of elbow pads that doesn’t cost a fortune.

  • The integrated design may not work for everyone
BAUER PRODIGY HOCKEY SHOULDER & ELBOW PAD COMBINATION TOP youth hockey elbow pads

Ideal for: Those looking for a hassle-free hockey gear solution for young kids.

The Bauer Prodigy Hockey Shoulder & Elbow Pad Combination Top is essentially like a short to be worn over the head. It gives the dual protection of regular shoulder pads and elbow pads.

The main advantages of opting for this combination top are that it prevents gear loss and saves an incredible amount of time, otherwise put in, in getting young kids geared up for hockey. It also prevents elbow pads from slipping.

In terms of protection, Bauer has used a mid-density foam on the elbows, a molded double density foam for the torso, and double density foam caps for the shoulder. The use of high-quality foam provides excellent protection throughout. Moreover, the breathable fabric of the shoulder pads keeps the players comfortable.

For the elbow pads, this top employs an adjustable elbow system to refine the fit as per the hand size.

Thus, if this top fits your kid well, i.e., aligns perfectly with his shoulder caps, torso, spine, and elbows, you will never feel like buying elbow pads and shoulder pads separately.

Bauer Supreme S29

Pros:

  • Excellent variant for beginners
  • Budget-friendly
  • Great coverage and protection
  • Excellent fit
  • Durable

Cons:

  • Not as mobile as mid-range variants
BAUER SUPREME S29 senior hockey elbow pads

Ideal for: Absolute beginners who want complete protection for a budget-friendly price

The Bauer Supreme S29 are budget-friendly elbow pads designed by Bauer specifically for absolute beginners. Beginners are far more susceptible to falls due to flailing arms and need elbow pads that focus on complete protection.

It comes with a molded cap for the elbows and PE technology protection for the biceps and forearms. To enhance the protection, it uses an independent construction on the biceps. This restricts unnecessary arm movement and protects against injuries.

The forearm, however, is anatomically molded (just like the 2S model) for an excellent snug feel. The Y-shaped straps lock the arm beautifully and prevent unwanted movement or slipping of the elbow pad.

The secure feel backed with a comfortable Thermo Max liner allows beginners to fully focus on improving their skills instead of worrying about injuries or slipping elbow pads.

Care tips for hockey elbow pads

Elbow pads, like shoulder pads, if not looked after properly, can start showing signs of wear and tear within a few uses. To prevent damage to elbow pads and to elongate their lifespan, you must:

  • Dry the elbow pads completely after every single use. Open all the straps completely, and then put the elbow pads on a gear drying rack or hanger.
  • Spray the elbow pads lightly with a sports deodorizer to prevent microbial growth and bad odors.
  • Soak elbow pads in a tub with a scoop of gear-friendly detergent or Oxiclean and then rinse them off thoroughly and leave them out to dry.
  • Check the strapping regularly and get any early signs of wear and tear fixed or repaired.
  • Inspect the elbow caps and the shell for cracks; replace cracked or broken elbow pads immediately with brand new elbow pads.

Ice Hockey Elbow Pads - Frequently Asked Questions

What elbow pads do NHL players wear?

NHL players wear pro-level elbow pads made by leading brands like CCM, Bauer, Warrior, etc.

Which elbow pad goes on which hand?

To determine which elbow pad goes on which hand, remember that the protective sides should stay on the outer side of the arm that’s visible to others when you cross your hands. This way, the strapping usually stays on the inner side of the arm.

How tight should elbow pads be?

Elbow pads should not feel too tight but should feel snug, i.e., they should not move when you move your arm but should not be so tight as to cut into your arm or restrict your movement.
