Plan your figure skating off-ice training routine

Why Work Out Off-Ice?

Figure skating is a sport. It is a beautiful sport but a demanding one.

  • Do you want to improve your skills and reach new levels - jumps, spins, attitudes?
  • Do you want to learn more difficult skills?
  • Do you want to be consistent with your results?

Well it takes a lot of practice on the ice for the technical aspects.
But it also takes off-ice practice to build your mind and body to be able to reach your goals.

For example, the muscles in the lower back and abdominals come into play during a jump. They contract for resisting the jump’s rotational force. If your body’s core is strong, your position will be more stable, and your jumps will improve.

What to work on off-ice to improve your figure skating?

Below is a summary of all the elements to add to your off-ice training routine - you can learn more about each one with examples of exercises and equipment to help in the rest of the article below.

  • Balance
  • Flexibility
  • Explosiveness
  • Endurance
  • Grace and artistry
  • Mental strength
  • And don't forget to rest!

How often to train off-ice?

Every skater has different skill levels, goals and schedules. The requisites and routines for training are in alignment with them. To illustrate, a recreational skater would be satisfied with a once-a-week class. Someone training for competitions would practice five days a week. Therefore, only you can decide your practice and progress.  The idea is to improve flexibility, strength and consistency of balance on the ice.

Define your figure skating off-ice training routine

  • Your training plan should be in alignment with practicing for a goal - therefore it should vary with the seasons
  • Your training program should take you towards progress.
  • It must take into account your time on the ice
  • Choose your training schedule with a healthy vision - do not do things in excess and plan time to rest
  • Make sure to plan variety in your exercises to not overtrain one muscle
  • A health professional can give appropriate advice regarding techniques related to specific exercises. Consult one. In fact, if your trainer possesses a health-related degree, you would benefit. If this degree connects to physical therapy, it is even more advantageous. By working with a qualified specialist, you avoid injuries and receive tremendous benefits.

Start by listing your goals, and how much training you will do in each category (how often, for how long and how intense) - this can vary every 4 weeks depending on your ice skating activity.

And then you can create a weekly schedule around your ice skating practices and off ice training.

Improve BALANCE for edge work, jumps, spins... - ice skating off-ice training

Why work on balance and core strength?

Figure skating is all about balance on the ice when sliding on the edge of a thin blade and in the air when jumping or being lifted.

Working on Core strength is essential to increase balance. The muscles in the back and abdomen hold your core strength. They are the control centers of your body.
Healthy muscles:

  • Aid in maintaining stability and balance.
  • Help you rotate well. This means that you will be able to handle the center of spin rotation well. Maintaining a tight air position when jumping will prove easy.
  • Help to have good control over your upper body. Therefore, crossovers, footwork and stroking will be child’s play for you.

Over time, your figure skating skills will include double jumps and more.

Improve FLEXIBILITY for attitudes - figure skating exercises off-ice

Why work on flexibility?

If you desire significant flexibility, you need to possess specific muscle lengths. These muscles are in the hips, knees and ankles. When these muscles stretch at the correct angles, your take-off and landing are always perfect! Spread eagles, spirals, split jumps, Biellmans, camel spins, etc, will prove easier!

Note that the concerned joint must be in a perfect position. Its motion must appear controlled too. This will happen only when the muscle length is exact. Muscle flexibility transfers to angular flexibility of the joints. Then, position and motion will be smooth and balanced. The evidence is there in the figure skater’s marvelous footwork, basic strokes, spins and crossovers.

Furthermore, flexibility prevents muscle injuries.

The following exercises are for off-ice training. However, it is also essential to do dynamic stretches before ice skating practice and static stretches after. Learn more.

Top 6 classic exercises to increase flexibility (for non-flexible people)

  • Seated toe-touch stretches
  • Cobra stretches
  • Standing toe touch stretches
  • Hip Flexor stretches
  • Butterfly stretches
  • Half splits and splits
If you are already flexible, you need to increase the difficulty bu using the half ball seen above and lifting your feet higher, do front splits, side splits and use the equipment below to stretch further.

Equipment to help work on flexibility

To increase the intensity of your stretches, you can find equipment at reasonable prices that are easy to use at home such as stretching bands and leg stretchers that attach to a door or ceiling.
And to help with gently stretching the back (for example for the Biellmann) you can use a yoga wheel.

Improve EXPLOSIVENESS for your off-ice jump training

Why work on explosiveness?

Your muscles must be strong, sure. But they must be able to be explosive, which is a little different. This is essential for your jumps.
Your muscle fibers must be able to contract and relax very fast and repeatedly.

Top 7 classic exercises to increase Explosiveness

  • Long jumps
  • Jumps over benches
  • Burpees
  • Stairs runs
  • Interval sprints
  • Sprints on slopes
  • Plyometric jumps - consisting of jumping on and off a box with various heights

Improve ENDURANCE to complete ice skating routines easily

Why work on stamina?

This is a requirement for all sports.
It does not matter whether you are participating in a short or long program. All the movements and skills bring on fatigue and difficult breathing. Therefore, to ensure you can complete your program more easily, you must build up your endurance.

How to improve your stamina?

You will improve your stamina by improving your heart rate. You must also be able to control your breathing for long periods.
Typical activities to improve your stamina are:

  • Moderate activity – walking up hill, rope jumping, social dancing, cycling on a flat terrain, canoeing on a lake, rowing, leisure roller skating, etc.
  • Vigorous activity – jogging, hiking, cycling uphill, cross country skiing, intense swimming, intense rope jumping, etc.

You must do these endurance exercises for at least 30 minutes to see benefits. Find out which kind of routine works for you. You must sustain energy, not deplete it.

Improve GRACE and ARTISTRY

Why work on grace and artistry?

Figure skating is an artistic sport. Nowadays we tend to forget a little because of all the jumps. The drastic rule changes over the past 20 years have had a big impact. Therefore, usually it is the best program technically which wins the highest marks, if basic artistry is here.
However, excellent artistry can make a difference when two skaters have similar technical levels.
And in Ice Dance, grace and artistry has a much more important impact on marks.

It helps to have a panel of possible movements in place with memory muscle to be natural in physical and facial expressions.

How to improve your grace and artistry?

  • You should work on your posture - especially working on back, shoulder and neck muscles
  • Your work on core strength and flexibility done above helps improve lines
  • Complete with other artistic sports - hip-hop, ballet, funk/jazz, ballroom, modern dance...
  • Theater or improvisation can also help you with expressing emotions

A great way to improve artistry is to record your performance. This way you can notice the position of your hands / arms / neck and then look in a mirror to fix it. Feel in your body the difference in positioning.

Improve MENTAL STRENGTH

Why work on mental strength?

It is important to possess good mental equilibrium too. However, many trainers overlook this aspect completely. You must be calm on the ice. The body will follow the mind.
You must first explore your reasons for taking up figure skating.
And then you should work on:

  • Visualization
  • Meditation
  • Mindfulness

REST

Such hectic activity should be followed by rest. Your body must have time to recover from the stress and strain. Therefore, do take some time off from your off-ice training program. Neither more nor less is better as far as figure skating training is concerned. You must take charge of your mind, if your body is to remain intact. Your body must have time to recover its strength.

Note that when you are training off the ice, your muscle fibers are breaking down. Only a nutritious regimen and appropriate rest can bring their strength back to normal. Therefore, include rest in your exercise schedule. Make the small changes. Note the big differences!

#1 Organize to simplify - tip for figure skating moms

Organize lessons:

When something is organized, it is easier to fall into a pattern for all the parties. This makes training easier and better.

Make sure the schedule is balanced, coving both on-ice practice and off-ice training – and if possible, adapt it to your kids’ cycle. Some kids are more alert and happier in the morning, others in the evening.
Always have the schedule up on the fridge or somewhere easily visible for everyone.

For better communication, it can be good to display the weekly schedule with the on-ice and off-ice sessions, as well as other things to do.
Check out my figure skating weekly planner template you can download for personal use:

Organize the bags & equipment:

Establish a routine not to waste any time. It may seem trivial, but it reduces the stress of the day.

Dry out equipment always together and at the same spot near the bag, so as not to forget anything:

  • The skates
  • The gloves
  • The blade towel - see some of my skate towels designs below, and discover more on my shop (they can be personalized)

Create a routine of preparing equipment for next practice:

  • Training Clothes are ready and laid out,
  • Snacks / meals are ready to be packed,
  • Water bottle is open when not in use, and close to the bag to remember to fill it when packing for practice - see some of my bottle designs below, and discover more on my shop (they can be personalized)

Organize for competition:

Competition time can be even more stressful than usual so you must make sure everything is organized as well: costumes, music, skates… (yes ice skates! - I had a friend once who arrived at the competition at a rink, a 2h away drive from home, and then realized she had forgotten her skates).

I have created competition checklists, so that you don’t forget anything (when planning for the competition, when getting ready and when you are at the competition). Get in on my Figure skating competition checklist article - what to do + what to pack.

#2 Keep an eye on time dedicated to figure skating - mums and dads tips

Frequent questions:

  • How Much Figure Skating Ice Time Is Too Much?
  • Is one required to skate every day of the week, if they want to feature in a national skating competition?
  • Is Natural talent is enough or can rigorous practice can make that talent shine through?
  • What makes the practice too much or too little?

Sorry, there is no one cookie cutter answer to this question. The middle ground is different for everyone. The dilemma is to find the sweet spot.

What to consider:

  • Willingness of all

There must be comfort and willingness in all parties involved here – the child, the parent(s), and the coach.

  • Rhythm

One can motivate and push the child, but one must understand that no two children are the same. You must figure what’s the rhythm and willingness of your child. If the friend is taking their child to the rink at 6 am doesn’t mean that your child will thrive like this as well. Don’t force anything. Some kids do better in the morning, other in the afternoon.

Figure skater rhythm to wake up
  • Objective

Another important consideration is, what do you want the practice for – is a competition coming up? Is it an important competition?

  • Coach values

See what the coach tells you. Some coaches will demand only the most sacrificing skaters. Others are fine with a progression in the sport at the child’s pace. The values of the coach and the family must match, else the training will always be imbalanced. The coach also decides ice-time on the basis of the child’s level of learning. He also evaluates the capacity of the child to learn.

  • Rest

Needs are different. More ice time does not necessarily mean better performance. The child must be trained as well as rested. Happy skaters are always better skaters.

#3 Check the skater's body for potential injury beginnings

Figure skating is a demanding sport. You should make sure your skater's body is well taken care of:

  1. Remind your kid to stretch - it takes care of the soreness and muscular issues. It shouldn’t be ignored.
  2. Check and see if they need medical help anywhere. Never overlook injury or even the slightest discomfort as it can become severe and serious.

Check these signs as they can be red flags:

  • Bumps around the foot (bunions, calluses and blisters)
These can be painful. They develop because of the pressure of the boots on the foot bones. You can treat them simply by buying proper skates, avoiding tight lacing, and buying donut padding for the blisters/calluses.
  • Malleolar bursitis
It is the swelling in inner part of the ankle bone. It happens due to the pressure of the skating boots, especially when the ankle has a tendency to lean inwards. You can add padding to diminish the issue. Fixing the blade slightly off-center on the boot can also help.
  • Achilles Tendonitis
This can happen if there is a lot of jumping in off-ice sessions. The stiffness of the boots causes excessive tension in the Achilles tendon. Repeat stretching exercises of the calf and Achilles as a preventive measure.
  • Ankle Sprain
This happens when there is less ankle support. The ankle muscles must support the stiff shoes for a prolonged period of time. This weakens the muscles. Carry out ankle strengthening and balancing exercises.
  • Knee injuries
Figure skating requires a lot of repetitive knee movements. When the front of the knee pains especially during or after jumps, spins etc. You can treat this by limiting the number of high impact activities and thigh strengthening exercises (working on quadriceps and hamstrings).
ice skating injury

And make sure your skater warms up and stretches

Warming up before and stretching after any activity should be an automatism. We are not taught this enough.

Sports is all about muscle performance, and this can increase, and injury be avoided if warm-up and stretching are done properly.

Make sure to do a few exercises with your kid:

Warm up with a few

  • Squats,
  • Rotations of the back,
  • Rotation of the shoulders,
  • Rotations of the neck

And Stretch especially:

  • The thighs (there is a lot of ups and downs in ice skating)
  • The calves

If you make it an automatism for your kid to do those things before and after a sport session, this is a huge win!

You can find my figure skating stretching routines in this article (for both warm-up and post-practice).

This is essential to prevent injuries. You can also check out my article about figure skating protective gear, to increase safety.

And you probably need a yoga mat to stretch and do core exercises. Make it fun with a personalized one! See all my available designs and colors here.

#4 Ask frequently - is my kid still into it?

A healthy body will work wonders if the mind that drives it is healthy too.

Make sure to look for signs that you child is not happy ice skating anymore. If these signs arise, discussion must happen:

  • They look miserable
All kids may go through times when they are loving their sport. So much hard work or the demands it makes on their life are resentful but if this is a permanent feeling, you must talk.
  • They feel major anxiety
A little bit of performance anxiety is normal. But check for signs of more: anxiety before practice, schoolwork suffering, difficulty focusing, restlessness
  • They don't have the spark anymore
Is your kid still smiling when talking about practice and tricks, are his/her eyes still sparkling?
  • They don’t get along with their coach
If there is a problem in the relationship between your child and their coach it might be a sign that something is wrong.
  • They say they don’t want to skate anymore
Don’t dismiss it if the child has found the voice to say it to you openly. Listen to the reasons and explore ideas for what they want to do next. Discuss. Find out if it is a temporary issue or an issue with a specific element of skating or if it is an overall change of heart.

Remember: You may have invested a lot in the sport, but the fact that the skater is stopping does not mean you wasted your time and money. All that has been learnt during practice and competition will stay with your kid: hard work, get-back-up attitude... check out my article about the life skills learnt from figure skating.

#5 Prepare balanced meals

This is a topic that is often neglected but must be considered properly.
Nutrition is essential for performance.

Give your child a balanced, healthy diet and let them eat, listening to their body for fullness. Never go to practice on an overly full or empty stomach.

I am not a nutritionist, and opinions vary on the subject. So, I won't give you details but my opinion is: "everything, but everything in moderation".

#6 Keep an eye but don't interfere with practice

There are 2 essential points to remember when at practice:

  • Do not try being the coach – let the coach do his job.
  • Do not discuss with the coach when your child is around.

Things to do

  • Regularly check how the coach and kids are getting along on the ice
  • Take a breather - if the competitive environment within the parent group is getting crazy, just go out and breathe
  • Check-in regularly with the coach to see what should be adapted
  • Have a chat with the coach away from your child. Talk about how ready your skater is for the up-coming event and try to get a feel for what the goal of this particular competition is. Not every competition is about winning so it's important to understand the goal of the event. This will help you be your most supportive
  • Play a role in choosing the program music, but let your skater / coach make the decision. Don't push the music you like. Your kid must be the one getting emotion from it - see my tips to choose figure skating music.
  • Make sure you understand the figure skating levels and what to expect
Figure skating coaching

How not to behave – the type of parent you do not want to be

  • Don’t be a pushy ‘future Olympian’ parent: You can motivate but don’t press for results, for beating everyone at the competition or being overly aggressive.
  • Don’t be the "but my kid does this or that" parent: Although an individual sport, kids practice with other skaters. Make sure you are inculcating team spirit.
  • Don’t be the Expert know-better parent: You don't know better than the coach, the judges, the club management etc. You can make suggestions in a positive way though.
  • Don’t be the Critic parent: don’t complain all the time and don’t be overly critical of the coach or the club. Believe me, it is not easy. My mom has been club president for 8 years. It is not an easy task with "just do it" solutions.

#7 Keep it positive at competitions

Your kid is starting to compete. This is exciting!
But be sure to not get carried away.

I have been competing for over 11 years with at least 12 competitions a year. And then I was a judge. I have seen all kinds of parents!

My recommendations are:

  • Stay positive - the most important is that your kid gives his/her best and has fun
  • Congratulate your kid – whatever happened, you should point out what went well
  • Applaud the other kids
  • Always stay calm - judges are humans and they can make mistakes. I can tell you that keeping focused during a long series of program so as not to miss a single second is difficult. This one of the reasons why I stopped judging. I was scared to give an unfair mark.
  • Don’t blame the equipment, coach, other players, judges or even the weather if your child does not do well. Blaming others teaches non-accountability to kids.
  • Make sure your kid journal his/her goals, successes, memories, emotions... Look at my collection of notebooks and journals.

#8 Take care of yourselves too - tips for figure skating parents

  • Take care of your finances

Ice skating is an expensive sport that demands a lot of expenditure on skates, costumes, travels, coach fees etc. Take care and spend according to pocket.
Be honest with your kid. Discuss what can be done and not done, what is most important. Teaching kids healthy finance young is a skill they will forever use. Don’t build a stress-based association of the sport in the kids’ mind.

  • Bring warm clothes and seat cushion

Waiting at the rink can be long and cold. Make sure you are comfortable with warm clothes, a warm drink and maybe a seat cushion!

  • Don't enter the game of some parents

You should stay in the car if need be – The competition between parents is way worse than between the kids. Some will try playing mind tricks. Do not waste your mental energy on those.
Or even just simply being around people complaining will bring you down. You have to be involved in your kid’s sport, but you don’t have to spend all the training time with the other parents.

Surround yourself with your kid's passion!

#9 Make sure you have other interests as a figure skating family

Sometimes, the passion for a sport can overtake the whole family with many training sessions, finances all centered towards it and competitions every weekend.
Make sure to keep some balance and have other interest as a family – other activities, or simple time together in a park every Sunday…

Choose your figure skating off-ice training equipment

There are 6 types of training a figure skater should be focusing on, when off-ice:

  • Balance
  • Flexibility
  • Explosiveness / power
  • Endurance
  • Grace and artistry
  • Mental strength
off-ice training figure skaters

All of them can be worked on without any equipment with exercises using only the weight of the body.
However, using specialized equipment can bring a lot to the off-ice training routine:

  • Variety of exercises
  • Types of exercises mimicking the figure skating moves (not possible without any accessories) - spinning, sliding, gliding...
  • Increase the intensity of an exercise

Therefore, I have collected for you 10 of the best equipment to help you train off-ice. They can be great gifts for figure skaters.

Note: always check out with a doctor or physiotherapist before practicing physical activities - and if you are a figure skating parent, always supervise off-ice training.

Safety Note - ESSENTIALS

Before you start using any spinner, please make sure you have enough space around you! If you lose balance, you may fall and hit something.

Types of spinners - Pros and cons

Why use an off-ice spinner?

Mastering the spin is essential for figure skaters. Learning how to do it will take time and patience.
The best way is to learn on the ice. However, your available time on the ice is most probably limited.
Your only solution is to practice spinning off-ice.

But have you tried spinning on the ground with a flat foot? NOT possible...

This is why you need a spinner. All models are created to allow you to rotate on the ground.
It is one of the best figure skating off-ice equipment - see all my suggestions.

What is an ice skating spinner?

It is a tool (metal, plastic...) that you place under your feet to be able to spin.
Several types of spinners exist: one-piece with rocker, 2 pieces rotation or discs.

Spinner figure skater

The one-piece spinners

One small piece of equipment larger than a foot, curved to get minimum floor friction and maximum spin.
2 types of designs: entirely curved or flat on top and curved below.

Pros

  • Generally, the cheapest options
  • Travels on the ground as you spin for a more realistic experience
  • Good to work on core muscle and balance
  • Easy to transport and store
  • More festive in the colors

Cons

  • Not for practicing your technique
  • It can give you bad habits as the user as a tendency to spin towards the heel
  • It can damage the floor
  • Narrow, not ideal for wide feet

The 2 plates spinners

2 pieces of metal with bearings allowing rotation. One plate stays on the floor while the other rotates above.

Pros

  • Stable, does not travel; it is, therefore, great to work on positioning - to drill it into your memory
  • Can be used on all types of flooring
  • Easy to store

Cons

  • Does not travel, so the experience is less realistic
  • No rocker to work on finding point of balance
  • Requires an understanding of spinning basis
  • Limited in what you can do with it

The ballet turn board - disc spinners

The ballet disc is one round piece of equipment with a curved bottom.

Pros

  • It makes you work the core as you try to keep balance with movement in all directions (as it is round)
  • Cheaper than 2 plates spinners

Cons

  • The surface is quite small - Better for ice dancer turning on their toes, not ideal for figure skaters spinning with a flat foot.

Even though they write "for ice skaters" in the description, I don't recommend this option for figure skaters.

Metal Ice skating Spinner Jerry - review

Type

2 plates - therefore great for working on positioning but does not travel and not ideal to work on balance point.

Get the spinner sold by Jerry's skating world

Get the alternative metal spinner

Reviews and notes

  • Grippy surface on bottom and top
  • Good quality product - just might need oil after a few days
  • Smooth and fast spin
  • Does not damage the flooring
  • Weight limit = not indicated, reviews seem positive regarding heavier users
  • Might feel a little small for adults with long feet
  • A little heavier than the one-piece a equipment but you can still travel with it
  • Users are reporting spinning progress - read the reviews
  • Check reviews of the Alternative - Get the alternative / Read reviews

Edea Spinner Review

Type

One-piece spinner - the rocker is only under, the top is flat.
Therefore great for working on balance (although not exactly the same point as when figure skating) but does not work on all flooring and can damage the floor. Good for working on core muscles, but not the best to perfect spinning position.

Get the Edea Spinner

Reviews and notes

  • Popular
  • Cool choice of designs
  • Don't use on wood - Damages floor
  • Generally considered better for balance than the curved one-piece spinner.
  • Users are reporting spinning progress - read the reviews

Zenmarkt Spinner review

Type

One-piece spinner with a curved design. Travels while spinning. Good for working on core muscles, but not the best to perfect spinning position. Easier to start with for a beginner, but may set up bad habits without basis training on the ice.

Get the Zenmarkt

Reviews and notes

  • Available in 2 colors
  • Can be purchased with or without practice book
  • Easy to practice spins
  • Damages floor

Bezioner Spinner review

Type

One-piece spinner with a curved design. Travels while spinning. Good for working on core muscles, but not the best to perfect spinning position. Easier to start with for a beginner, but may set up bad habits without basis training on the ice.

Life skills' benefits of figure skating

Figure Skating teaches a child (or an adult) so many things apart from the sport itself. As a figure skating mum you can be happy about that 🙂
This is true for all sports though, but Figure Skating has some interesting values to instill.
It will help you or your child:

  1. To not be afraid of failure and to get back up quickly
  2. To focus on the effort and the learning
  3. To be consistent to achieve success
  4. To trust his/her instinct and make quick decisions
  5. To be eager to learn from others
  6. To be organized

Let me show you how in the following article.

Life skill #1 - Figure skating benefit: A Get up Spirit

Figure skating is one of the best sports that exist to work on your GET UP spirit.

If and when you try and you fall over, get up quick!

  • On the ice you want to because it is cold and wet 🙂
  • And in life: You might benefit with this ‘bounce back’ approach and realize that the more you are down and out and you don’t try to rise up immediately, then you will take longer to sort it out, deal with it and begin growing and learning normally again. It's important to fall but equally important to pick yourself right back up and begin working at learning in a healthy way.

How you get up is important.

The 2017 U.S. Figure Skating Association’s ‘The Get Up campaign’ said:

“Ice is slippery, and so is life” & “It is how we get up that matters.”

This is the very essence of the entire sport. You will have a bad day and you will fall and what matters is how these obstacles are being dealt with. This applies to anything and everything. How quickly and naturally one gets over a failure, a rejection and a letdown and how immediately you begin to work in a forward direction is a steppingstone towards defining YOU.

Go back to your why

When you are down on the ice again and again, at one-point frustration may increase.
And if it becomes overwhelming.

  • Take a deep breath
  • Think about why you started
  • Imagine quitting right now
  • See what your mind tells you
Get back up spirit figure skating benefit

Life skill #2 - Resilience

There are seldom easy roads to success.
Growth can be a frustrating process, but you can work harder for something that drives your passion. If you really are passionate about something it won’t leave you alone even if you quit, it will keep on coming up right back into your life.

The real strength is in knowing that you have overcome something and shall overcome more if life throws you more and bigger challenges.

The ‘never give up’ attitude is helpful when you are at practice but all you do is fall and get right back up for hours at a stretch. If you are trying out something new, you might need to do it 100 times each day for 3 weeks straight until you do it right. Most out of these tries would flop but if you think you can, you will be able to!

When you fall all the time, falling becomes immaterial and toughness takes the place of the sting.
You learn to manage it and learn from it, it becomes consistency and ultimately perfection. You can control your mind and direct it towards the positive if you get rejected over and over and then nothing can break you.

This is very crucial for a child to learn. Resilience is a key personality trait which helps children learn that challenges are not be feared but to be faced with all they have. If it’s a child who is doing figure skating, they can be encouraged to try something new and be allowed to take a calculated risk. The new challenge will build resilience and bounce back effectiveness. The focus should be on the effort that the child puts in and the learning they receive in return.

Life skill #3 - Consistency

Doing something once or being able to do something once and doing it over and over with the same awesomeness are different things and take different skillsets. Consistency is a virtue which will reward you with respect and praise all your life in everything you do. Figure skating builds this virtue like nothing else.

Showing up and delivering is key in Figure skating and in life.

You might have had many problems and obstacles which would affect the quality of delivery but in the end what matters is if you can offer what you promised. As a skater, this means performance at a constant or even an increasing level and as a person living their life it means being regularly better each time you do something.

The people sitting there to judge would just be concerned with how you do, in that moment. More than excellence, consistency is what people look for in a performer. Completing tasks at hand with equal gusto and set pace is more important than doing each one of them absolutely perfectly.

When you do figure skating, the most important part is showing up every day at practice. This is what helps you in life too:

  • When you are trying to get healthy you need to check your diet and exercise each day and only consistency will get you results.
  • When you want to master a new skill for work
  • When you want to start your own company
  • ...

This habit gets into you thanks to figure skating.

Consistency skill figure skating mental benefits

Life skill #4 - Decision making / Trusting instinct

Figure skating gives you better judgment and the skills to take decisions fast and effectively.

The children who get into figure skating get ample opportunities to learn something that’s not common knowledge, evolution and consistency. They can judge a situation and what’s there for them in it, in a better way. This directly influences their happiness as well. Decisions are made with a combination of emotion and logic and they are not always to the same effect and there is also a lot of heart that is in them. There can be no cookie cutter right or wrong but also something personal which dawns with a clarity that figure skating can give.

Instinct also plays a role when there are split-second decisions to be taken: to change a jump or modify a position in order to control the outcome.

Logic or emotion doesn’t drive that, the instinct does. The moment has to be felt rather than analyzed. The more one practices the more naturally instinct flows and one is more comfortable trusting their heart to take those decisions.

Life skill #5 - Being coachable

Being coachable is another virtue that figure skating instills. This means that you are ready and open to learn something new and inviting someone to make some changes in you that make you better.

If you take the criticism personally or get offended by the feedbacks easily, it means your ego is in the way of letting situations change or mold you. If they sound cool and give you a ‘try it’ motivation, the feedback is being taken constructively and you are committed to becoming better and growing. Figure skating makes you fall so much, you forget the humiliation that might be a theme to it and learn to let the falls change you.

The same concept comes at play when you are out of the sport, in life and faced with a variety of things and people who might be the source of something you can learn from. If you are malleable the situations can hammer and push you into a shape where you will be more comfortable. The sport teaches you this fluidity of the concept of self.

coachable figure skater

Life skill #6 - Organizational Skills

Time management, Organization, Responsibility - Any sport teaches these virtues but the one who takes it seriously benefits even in regular life away from the rink.

Remembering when is practice day and time, packing things with mindfulness, getting the gear ready, finishing homework before practice, reminding oneself to be more alert and aware of what happens in the rink are all things associated with the sport and slowly seep into the personality of the person who diligently practices the sport.

The roles change with time and more things get added to the responsibility list. A figure skating sportsperson develops his/her caliber to take on more organizational duties.

One can say that there are no time managers better than skaters. They wake up early, they train for hours before school, manage school well, do homework and still thrive.

What better preparation of adulthood, if not this? Achieving what one wants to achieve in the limited time we are granted each day is a gift a skater has and needs to hone. Go ahead and surprise them all by fitting in laborious hours into the schedule and still come out with flying colors. Thanks to skating.
