Best ice skate towels (to dry out blades)

Last updated on April 24, 2021

Drying out your blades after practice is essential to avoid rusting and damage. But, who says it has to be done with a boring piece of fabric? Check out my suggestions for the best ice skate towels to consider adding to your figure skating bag.

Best ice skate towels - the Ice Skating Passion collection

As I grew up ice skating I was often frustrated by my towel to dry out my blades.
Recently I have created a collection of personalizable ice skating gifts on Zazzle and I found their kitchen towels.

I decided to order one to try it on my blades after practice. And I loved it!

ice skating mom beginner tip - take care skates
  • First, it is very absorbent - I don't have to rub my blades like crazy.
  • Second, the tissue is very soft and nice to hold
  • Third, the towel is big enough to dry both blades without being soaked (16" x 24")
  • Fourth, the towel can be personalized, which I love. I used to have boring ones, but this one adds visual pleasure at the end of a practice session.

This is why I have created a series of ice skate blade towels for you to personalize with the name of the figure skater!

Check them out! Some of those designs are available in many colors.

Types of materials and other criteria

Now, if you are looking for more information to help you take your decision, below are the main criteria to consider when choosing your blade towel:

An absorbent material

This is obvious, but, yes, this is the most important. You want a material that absorbs the liquid efficiently. And that absorbs it well on metal.
But you also want a material that is nice to hold and will not lose any fibers as you use it.

The classic materials you find in shops are:

  • Chamois cloth - often used for cars
  • Microfiber - often used for watersports
  • Terry cloth - classic bathroom towel

But new materials have been developed.
The one in the towels I have shown above is a poly-blend. It is so soft I first doubted it would absorb. But boy was I wrong! It is the best towel I have ever used on my blades.

Size

Don't get a very small towel. I know you want space in your ice skating bag, but if it is too small it will get wet from the first blade and then you won't be able to dry out properly the second one.

Design & Personalization

And then there is the design.
You may want something simple and plain, but I think something colorful and pretty is better. It makes the experience of drying out the blades more enjoyable, especially as you should be thorough when doing it.
Plus if it as your name, it makes it even more special.

Other classic ice skate blade towels

If you still prefer the more "classic" options for blade towels, below are some suggestions:

Microfiber towels

Get it on Amazon

Microfiber towels are very popular nowadays for all sorts of activities.

  • They are soft on the skin
  • They dry out quickly
  • They are very compact
  • You can find them in different sizes and colors
  • Beware! They should not be washed with cotton materials to keep the integrity

Terry cloth

Get it on Amazon

If you like matching everything, check out this pack of guards, soakers and towel in the same colors (several colors available).
But you can also use a simple bathroom towel

  • Easy to find anywhere
  • Not the most absorbent on metal
  • But towels in terry cloth can be bulkier

Chamois cloth

Get it on Amazon

And then there is the chamois cloth, often used on cars. It comes and goes as a trend to dry out blades.

  • Very absorbent
  • Safe for all surfaces - won't damage your blades
  • Personally, I don't like how the fabric evolves over time - it is rough when dry

Tips to care for your blades

Don't forget to dry the plate!

Beginners often only dry the blade. However, the plate attached to the boot is also metal. It must be dried out too.

Soakers

Once the blades and plates are dried out, you should not put the plastic guard back on them. They would keep all residual moisture trapped inside.
But, you still need to protect your blades inside the bag. So, you should be using soakers. They are made of fabric and will take care of any moisture left.

You can make them yourself with terry cloth, or you can find classic and fun ones online:

See the many colors

See the different animals available

I just don't recommend buying some with glitter. The rubbing of items in the bag mean that the glitter will detach and may end up on your blades and do some damage.

Once at home take your skates and towel out of the bag to dry

Everything is still a little wet in your bag (especially the inside of your boot with sweat). The first thing you should do when arriving home should be to take everything out of the bag.
Open your skates to dry - but not near a heater.
And make sure to dry your towel too to have it perfect for next practice.

Hockey Skates vs. Figure Skates

For many years, societal norms have led us to believe that figure skating is a sport for girls, and ice hockey is a sport for boys. That is also one of the reasons why most hockey skates come in black color. But with changing times, these conventional norms have been questioned time and again.

Today, many girls take to ice hockey and perform exceedingly well at it. So how do you determine which type of skates to buy?
The decision depends entirely on personal preference.

But to make it easier for you, let me briefly discuss the difference between the two types of ice skates -

figure skate vs hockey skate boot and blade c

Figure skates

  • Boot - Lighter and thinner and comes with a small outer heel
  • Blade - Longer blade, thicker blade with a toe pick in the front
  • Use - Figure skating, which is an artistic sport involving moves.
  • Advantage for beginners - Easier to gain balance because of the stability provided by the blade and toe pick. However, the use of the toe pick for propulsion could result in the development of improper technique.

Hockey skates

  • Boot - Heavier, thicker, and padded
  • Blade - Lighter, thinner, deeper and does not extend beyond the boot.
  • Use - Hockey skates are used while playing ice hockey, which is an aggressive team sport involving the use of hockey sticks and pucks.
  • Advantage for beginners - Use of hockey skates can develop correct technique because of the lack of a toe pick. The light weight also promotes speed and does not cause fatigue even after long hours of practice. However balance can be more difficult to find because blades are shorter and have more of a rocker.

How to choose the best ice skates for girls?

Before you buy ice skates, you must consider certain factors that will help you make the right choice and that you get the best out of the ice skates you buy.

The one entirely unimportant factor is the decor on ice skates. Girls ice skates come in attractive designs. I often find girls falling for the looks of the ice skates without considering essential factors.

To prevent you from making that mistake, let me set out some critical considerations before buying ice skates -

Ankle Support

Ankle support is crucial to the development of correct skating technique. It also prevents long term injuries and posture defects.
Inherently, hockey skates are stiffer and therefore offer better ankle support.
Figure skates, on the other hand, need to be thoroughly checked for ankle support.

So how do you determine if your beginners' ice skates offer appropriate ankle support?

  • Wear the ice skates and see if there is any extra room around the ankle area.
  • Check if the ankle area of the boot folds or crumples.
  • Check if you can move your leg without bending at your ankle area.

If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, the ice skates do not offer proper ankle support and, therefore, must not be used.

criteria to choose ice skates

Fit

How well you learn the art of ice skating depends entirely on the fit of your kid's ice skates. Skates that do not fit properly restrict freedom of movement and put you at a greater risk of injury.

How should you ensure that your ice skates fit correctly?

  • The big toe must sit comfortably and should not press tightly against the inner edge of the boot.
  • There should be no extra space around the sides of your feet.
  • There should be no extra space above the ankle area.
  • The heel must be locked in place, leaving no wriggle room.

To be sure ice skates fit properly, it is also best to consult a coach and read customer reviews. Different brands have different fit (wide, narrow, high arch...)

Comfort

The only way you will enjoy your ice skating experience is by being comfortable in your ice skates. However, several elements contribute towards the overall comfort of ice skates, such as -

  • A proper fit (most important)
  • Good internal air-circulation and breathability of the feet
  • Moisture wicking and quick drying technology
  • Adequate padding for warmth and softness

The best way to gain an insight into the comfort of kids' ice skates without trying them on is by reading customer comments under the product description.

How to check the Size

Sizing in ice-skates differs from brand to brand. Some brands use the same sizing as regular shoes.

But most ice skates run smaller than regular shoes.

To buy ice skates of the correct size -

  • Wear ice skating socks and measure the foot correctly. Alternatively, outline the foot on a piece of paper and measure the outline.
  • Refer to the sizing chart of the brand whose ice skates you plan to buy
  • Read customer reviews for more insights.

Never buy a bigger size to accommodate the growing feet of your little girl. Loose ice skates can damage the learning experience of your girl.

It is always best to upgrade to bigger ice skates with every change in foot size. But to save costs, you could buy adjustable ice skates such as the Lake Placid Adjustable Hockey Skates, which are one of the best ice skates for a beginner child.

Best Hockey Skates for Girls - Recommendation and Reviews

As I mentioned earlier on in this this article, I am going to break certain stereotypes by recommending a few ice hockey skates for girls.

Unfortunately, some of the ice skates specified here will be available only in the classic men's skates color - black. However, don't let that deter you from choosing these skates and engaging in this wonderful sport.

CCM Super Tacks 9350 Ice Hockey Skates

Ideal for - Recreational hockey skating

Buy on Pure Hockey

hockey skates for young girl

Pros

  • Extremely comfortable
  • Durable
  • High-quality blade
  • Ergonomic design
  • Stylish looks

Cons

  • Not suitable for professional players

Review and features

These CCM skates work well for girls who are recreational ice hockey players.
These CCM Super Tacks work exceptionally well at ensuring player comfort. They employ a thick 7mm tongue, which is further infused with thick injected foam.
This overall thickness offers comfort to the top part of the foot and protects against unintentional slashes and pucks. The thickness also safeguards the foot, especially a narrow one, against lace bites.
Furthermore, the microfiber lining also enhances comfort and promotes freedom of movement.
The blade on these skates is a stainless steel speed blade that also complements an attacking style of play.
Having said that, these ice skates will not meet the needs of girls playing ice hockey at advanced levels.

Buy on Pure Hockey

ice skates hockey player girl

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Durable
  • Provides adequate support
  • Equipped with mid-level blade
  • Moderately priced

Cons

  • No toe protector

Review and features

The Bauer Supreme series often features in the list of best boys ice skates. Therefore, there is no reason why these skates should not feature on this list too.
These Bauer ice skates have been designed to cater to the needs of a young hockey player.
Accordingly, the quarter package draws its strength from a fiber-based construction that excels at providing due protection to the player. The thick, felt tongue boosts this protection without restricting forward movement.
The memory foam used on its ankle padding securely locks the heel in place and encourages a smooth stride. The only element lacking in these skates is a toe protector (like the one provided by the Botas Draft 281)
The bottom end of these skates has been powered for performance by using a TPR outsole and the LS1 blade packed in a TUUK Lightspeed holder.

As a whole unit, the make of these skates can easily support from a beginner to mid-level team player.

Additional Ice Skating Equipment for your daughter / grand-daughter

No matter what ice skating sport you take up, you will need to invest in additional ice skating equipment to get the best out of your ice skates for children. More on my article about the 10 essentials to have in your figure skating bag.

Gloves

We all know that gloves work wonders at keeping our hands warm.
But over and above that, when ice skating, they can even offer some level of protection against falls.
In fact, ice hockey players wear properly padded gloves for protection against collisions.
No matter what sport you follow, remember that the gloves you buy must be warm and quick drying.
Find out the best options

Socks

Using the right type of socks is very important when ice skating.
Avoid wearing thick socks at all costs. Thick socks will not let you feel your sole, and you will not be able to control your movements.
It is best to use thin, seamless socks that extend above your knees.

Helmet & other protections

Depending on the age of your ice skating girl, you should consider the helmet. Like riding a bike, or rolling on the street, falling on the ice is hard.
Other protections to consider are knee pads and wrist pads.

Water bottle

Hydration is very important. Just because you are in a cold environment and it looks like not much effort to glide, don't be fooled. It is demanding effort from a lot of muscles. You need to hydrate frequently. Here are some water bottles to go with your new passion - or see all my designs in my shop.

How to take care of ice skates

Taking proper care of ice skates determines how well the skates perform and how long they last.

Here are some quick tips for you (more on this article)-

Before first use

Most blades for ice skates do not come pre-sharpened. You must sharpen the skates before the first use.

After every use

  • Wear blade guards whenever you walk off the ice rink.
  • Dry the blades out completely using an absorbent towel - see my designs below (more on my shop) or learn more on my article.
  • Cover the ice skates using soakers for ice skates when carrying them in your bag.
  • Take out the ice skates and let the ice skates air dry completely.

Periodic checks

Periodically check the ice skates for wear and tear and damages. The areas that must be inspected are

  • Blades: to see if there is a dent or if they need sharpening
  • Boot: to see if there are any wear and tear or cuts and if it needs polishing
  • Laces: to see if they have started thinning out and need to be replaced
  • Heel: to see if there are cuts
  • The blade holder: to see if the blades are firmly affixed to the holder and if the screws need to be tightened.

Hockey skates vs. Figure skates for beginners

If you are wondering which type of ice skates are best for beginners - hockey skates or figure skates -, let me give help you decide:

Figure skates are ideal for someone who -

  • prefers a thicker blade for quicker development of balance,
  • is interested in an artistic sport,
  • would like to spin, jump and perform tricks,
  • prefers a softer, more lightweight pair of ice skates.

Hockey skates are ideal for someone who -

  • is interested in playing hockey, of course,
  • who would like to engage in speedier, quick movements,
  • prefers a solid boot with more structure and support,
  • who doesn't mind spending time learning how to balance on thinner blades with more of a rocker.
figure skate vs hockey skate boot and blade c

New skates vs. Used skates

Buying used skates is often a tempting idea when you are hesitant about spending money on brand new ice skates.
Used skates often come with the following problems -

  • flexing of the boot as per the foot of the previous user (which is not ideal for your flexion),
  • rust spots on blades,
  • wear and tear at the ankle level,
  • worn-out padding,
  • loose, worn-out laces.

Buying used skates is only suitable for recreational skaters who are unlikely to use ice skates more than a couple of times in a year.
However, if you are planning to go regularly and want to make some progress, I recommend buying new skates.

Factors to consider when choosing beginner ice skates

Here are some criteria that you must take into consideration in order to zero down on the best ice skates for adults -

Ankle Support

This is essential - I often see people who purchase ice skates because they were cheap and pretty. But with very little force the boot is bending in all directions.
Lack of proper ankle support can exert pressure on the shins, lead to improper technique, and can put you at the risk of injuries because you don't find good balance.
Thus, do not fall prey to bargain deals and cheap price tags.

Comfort

If your ice skates are not comfortable, you would not want to spend time wearing them. Therefore, comfort should be the topmost factor that you should consider when buying beginner ice skates.

What makes ice skates comfortable?

  • Proper fit (discussed in-depth below)
  • Breathability
  • Ankle support
  • Appropriate padding
  • Retention of warmth
  • Light-weightiness

If you are buying ice skates online where you can't try out the skates, look at all the specifications in detail. Reading customer reviews and customer queries can also be of great help.

criteria to choose ice skates

Fit

A great fit is essential not only for superior comfort but also for developing proper ice skating technique.

When choosing beginner skates for adults, here are some rules to ensure a perfect fit -

  • The ice skates should feel snugger on your feet than regular shoes
  • The ice skates should leave enough room for your toes to breathe
  • The ice skates should hold your heel in place
  • The ice skates should not leave too much extra room around your ankle, a single finger when flexing the ankle is good.

Different brands have different fit (wider, higher arch...)

Size

Remember that ice skates usually fit small. Therefore, in most cases, you will need to buy ice skates that are 1-2 sizes smaller than your regular shoe size.

The best way to ensure you buy a size that fits you perfectly is by -

  • Wearing thin ice skating socks and measuring your foot
  • Referring to the brand-specific sizing chart
  • Reading customer reviews for more insights

For half-sizes, the brand usually suggests what size to settle down on. Read the product description carefully.

If you are looking for ice skates for wide feet, you will often need to go up a size for better comfort. But in any case, it is best to refer to brand suggestions or read customer reviews thoroughly to figure out if the skates are right for your foot-type.

Weight

The overall weight of ice skates will determine your ease of movement. When it comes to choosing good skates for beginners, you should remember that -

  • Lighter skates further better movement but
  • A heavier blade ensures better control

Thus, at beginner level, it is best to buy ice skates with a shoe that does not feel bulky when worn, and that comes with a basic stainless-steel blade.

As you get better, you can opt for lighter blades for faster speed and advanced tricks and turns.

Best Ice Skates for Beginners - Reviews of hockey skates

Bladerunner Zephyr - review

Type - Hockey

Ideal for - Beginner adult

Buy on Amazon

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable with padded Thinsulate lining
  • Secure structure for ideal support
  • A closure that ensures the perfect fit
  • Long-lasting stainless-steel blades

Cons

  • "Female" variant is unavailable

Features and Review

The Bladerunner Zephyr is one of the best ice skates for hockey for beginners.
Since they come with the hockey-style blade, the boot comes with a firm molded shell that instantly helps balance. Its low center of gravity quickly builds confidence.
The boot can also be secured with a quality lacing system enhanced with a buckle closure at the top.
These features make these skates the ideal first ice skates for beginners looking for adequate ankle support, stability, and control.
The high point of these skates that makes them the perfect choice lies in their comfort value. These skates are incredibly lightweight because of the use of Thinsulate (thinnest material for insulation). The use of Thinsulate not only cuts weights but also keeps the feet warm at all times.
While these are the great ice hockey skates for beginners, unfortunately, they only come in a men-specific variant.

Jackson Ultima Softec Skates - review

Type - Hockey

Ideal for - Beginner / Recreational ice hockey skater

Buy on Amazon

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Super comfortable
  • Comes in a wide range of sizes
  • Easy to wear

Cons

  • Only suitable for recreational ice hockey players

Features and Review

These Jackson ice skates are one of the best recreational ice skates for men and women. They are popular amongst beginner adults learning to skate because of the supreme comfort that they provide.
These skates' comfort and ultralight weight allow beginners and recreational skaters to wear them for a more extended period and make the most of their time on the ice rink.
Just like the Bladerunner Zephyr, these ice skates also use Thinsulate lining for providing warmth to the skater.
However, in terms of comfort, these ice skates go a step further. These ice hockey skates use nylon upper and a soft foam padded tongue together with a Thinsulate lining. As a whole, all these features come beautifully together to provide the airy warmth to the feet of the skater without making the skates feel bulky.
Plus, the use of nylon for the uppers and synthetic on the outsoles makes these ice hockey skates durable.
However, given that these skates come with a leisure blade, they can only be used by recreational ice hockey players. Someone who practices ice hockey a bit more seriously may not benefit from these ice skates.

Best Ice Skates for adults - Reviews of figure skates

Lake Placid Cascade Women's Figure Skates

Type - Figure

Ideal for - Figure skating beginner

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Speed hooks for ease of wearing
  • Waterproof sole
  • Attractive
  • Durable

Cons

  • Ankle support not suitable for serious figure skaters

Features and Review

First of all, let me state that these skates are on this list because of the value they provide despite being one of the cheapest ice skates available online. These skates offer average ankle support but are not ideal for those that take figure skating seriously.
However, if you are someone that struggles with rental ice skates and are looking to buy affordable figure skates for beginners, these skates are perfect for you.
These figure skates come with a synthetic upper and a synthetic outsole for long-term use. Moreover, the woven lining allows quick drying. In terms of comfort, too, these skates fare adequately.
Even though these figure skates use a traditional lacing system, to save time lacing, these ice skates are equipped with speed hooks.
What is impressive about these figure skates is that the neat use of the gold accents does not make them look cheap despite their affordable price tag.
(Note: If you plan on ordering these ice skates, I strongly recommend you read the Lake Placid Ice Skates reviews under the product listing to find the perfect fit for you. Even though the brand recommends you order a size smaller, you may find it best to stick to your shoe sizing.

Riedell 110

Type - Figure

Ideal for - Recreational figure skater

Pros

  • Durable
  • Comfortable
  • Minimal maintenance required
  • Moderately priced
  • Decent ankle support

Cons

- Average looks

Features and Review

These recreational Riedell Ice Skates are one of the best figure skates for adults.
Riedell, as a brand, focuses on comfort and durability. Therefore, these figure skates also use materials that last long. The PVC sole works perfectly without needing periodic maintenance, and the stainless)steel spiral blade is also suitable for long term use.
The foam quarter padding and Riedell-favorite split tongue design deliver adequate comfort. These classic-looking ice skates employ a traditional lacing system to make them simple to wear.
Riedell also enhances the safety of these ice skates by featuring quilted linings.
That said, to ensure high-quality ankle support, make sure you buy a size that fits perfectly, and that does not leave much room around the ankle.
The only downside of these skates is its bland look. I wish they came with a more attractive design with a few accents to appeal to the style-conscious figure skaters.

Jackson Ultima Excel review

Type - Figure

Ideal for - Beginner Adult (Women) trying to do tricks

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Adequate support for beginner
  • Durable
  • Use a quality Mark-II blade
  • Good value for money

Cons

  • Only suitable for beginners

Features and Reviews

The real thrill of figure skating lies in learning to perform jumps, spins, and turns.
If you think you have reached a stage where you could look for figure skates that can support these skills, these women's ice skates are your best bet. They would make a great gift for a budding figure skater.
The Jackson Ultima Excel is a quality product in terms of its make. It uses vinyl-coated upper solidified with synthetic lining for durability.
The PVC outsole enhances the durability, further making these ice skates an excellent long-term investment.
For comfort, the mesh tongue, coupled with a light foam-padded back, makes the boot feel soft on the feet. Jackson rates these ice skates with a level 5 support that's perfect for beginner-level figure skating.
In my opinion, it is this comfort, powered by the use of the Mark II blade, that makes these the best ice skates for women learning new tricks.
However, once you start advancing, you will need to upgrade to better figure skates.

Jackson Ultima JS 452 Figure Skates

Type - Figure

Ideal for - Beginner Adult (Men) trying to do tricks

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Adequate support
  • Durable
  • Use a quality Mark-I blade
  • Good value for money

Cons

  • Only suitable for beginners

Features and Reviews

At the outset, let me clarify that these figure skates are very similar in terms of functionality to the Jackson Ultima Excel. However, unfortunately, the age-old gender rule prescribes that white skates must be worn by female ice skaters, and men's ice skates must come in black color.
Therefore, I am only enlisting this variant here because it comes in a classic black color and is also suitable for men learning to do tricks.
These skates are very similar to the Jackson Ultima Excel and therefore are made using the same vinyl-coated upper and PVC outsole.
The Jackson Ultima JS 452 additionally uses a rolled padded lining and extra foam padding on the ankle. This ensures that the boots do not cut into the skin, causing irritation.
Also, these men's ice skates feature a Mark-I blade that is also suitable for supporting twirls and turns.

Additional Ice Skating Equipment

In addition to a pair of good ice skates, you will also need to buy some more essential equipment. You can check out my article about all the equipment to have in your ice skating bag. While some of those essential items can be bought over time, the ones that you must invest in right at the outset are -

Socks

The ice skating community is divided over the use of socks. Some believe that they are imperative, while others prefer skating without socks.

However, I have always used socks, and I find that socks help in providing warmth, wicking moisture, and keeping your feet dry.

But choosing the wrong type of socks could impede free movement. Thus, you should opt for socks that are -

  • thin
  • long and
  • seamless

Gloves

Gloves not only provide warmth, but they also protect your hands in case of falls and collisions. As with socks, you must opt for gloves that are

  • thin
  • light
  • fit well and
  • dry fast

Water bottle

Hydration is very important. Just because you are in a cold environment and it looks like not much effort to glide, don't be fooled. It is demanding effort from a lot of muscles. You need to hydrate frequently. Here are some water bottles to go with your new passion - or see all my designs in my shop.

Tips to help you keep your ice skates in good condition

It is important to take proper care of your ice skates to protect them against wear and tear, rusting, and damage.

  • Keep your blades sharp - Sharp blades ensure risk-free skating. Get your ice skates blades sharpened before the first use and then periodically after that. Learn more about sharpening figure skates
  • Use blade guards - Use blade guards when stepping outside the ice rink with your skates on. Most ice skates come with basic blade guards. But make sure you do not use blade guards when storing skates in ice skates bags - see my article about the best guards for figure skates
  • Keep the blades dry - Blades must remain rust-free for long term use, and drying blades after every use ensures that. Wipe with a clean absorbent towel and then pack your blades in ice skate soakers. Here are some fun absorbent towels to personalize (more designs in my shop):

  • Keep the boots dry - Air dry your ice skates after every use. Take the insoles out to get rid of trapped moisture.
  • Check your ice skates periodically - You must check your ice skates periodically to see if they need mending. Check the blades for dents and rust, the laces for thinning, the heel area for cuts and the blade holders for loose screws

What are the best ice skates for little kids - FAQ

Although kid ice skates are structured like adult ice skates in terms of their fit, comfort, and functionality, some additional features exist, and you may be wondering if they are a good idea. Below are the answers to your frequently asked questions.

Are double blade ice skates for toddlers a good idea?

Using double-blade ice skates for toddlers is an excellent way of introducing your toddler to the art of skating. Ice skates with two blades work in the same manner as a bike with safety wheels does.

The broader surface area of double blade toddler ice skates

  • Makes balancing much easier
  • Ensures the development of proper skating technique
  • Builds confidence
  • Makes skating fun for toddlers
Therefore, for a first experience, some children will be less scared.
However, they do delay the learning of proper technique.
hockey skates or figure skates

Hockey skates vs. Figure skates

The two primary types of ice skates are hockey skates and figure skates. It doesn't matter which type of ice skates you choose for a beginner toddler learning to skate. However, here are some guidelines -

Balance -

  • Easier in a figure skate because of the thicker blade and toe pick
  • Could take more time in hockey skates because of a shorter blade and rocker

Protection and comfort -

  • Ice hockey boot is stiffer and can protect better against falls and collisions but is heavier
  • Figure skating boot is more lightweight and feels more comfortable thanks to its wooden heel

Type of movement -

  • Figure skates are designed for spins and jumps
  • Hockey skates are designed for swift movement, sharp turns, and quick stops.

Should you choose adjustable ice skates?

With the continually growing feet of toddlers, parents often worry about having to buy new kid ice skates regularly.

Adjustable ice skates are a solution to this issue as they provide the following benefits -

  • They can be adjusted to accommodate the growing feet of a toddler,
  • They last longer,
  • They prove to be more economical.

However, make sure that the adjustable ice skates you intend buying do not suffer from:

  • Improper blade to foot ratio,
  • Lack of enough ankle support.
buying used ice skates

New skates vs. Used skates

Buying used skates is often a tempting proposition for parents who are hesitant about spending money on brand new ice skates.

Used skates often come with the following problems -

  • Rusty blades,
  • Creases on the ankle area due to wear and tear,
  • Worn-out padding,
  • Flexing of the boot as per the foot of the previous user,
  • Loose, worn-out laces.

Buying used skates is only suitable for recreational skaters who are unlikely to use ice skates more than a couple of times in a year.

However, you should avoid buying used skates for toddlers learning a new skill or intending on being enrolled for a skating class as used skates could expose your toddler to the risk of injuries or development of improper technique.

How to choose the best ice skates for toddlers?

Finding the right ice skates for 2-year-old toddlers involves as much work as finding the right ice skates for an adult serious about ice skating.
Here are ways in which you can ensure that you make the right choice -

Check if they provide appropriate ankle support -

This is the most important thing to check. Very cheap ice skates are often way too flexible and won't provide sufficient support. Your kid will feel unstable and risk injury.
Children's ice skates must provide enough ankle support to ensure an injury-free skating experience. Ankle support is absolutely critical.
Ice skates with adequate ankle support ensure the development of proper skating techniques and promote better balance.

Ice skates that provide good ankle support -

  • They Are not soft or flexible around the ankle,
  • The boots will not have any crumples around the ankle,
  • The ankles and the shin will operate as a single unit.

Hockey skates, by default, tend to provide better ankle support than figure skates.

Check if they are comfortable -

Toddlers should not be made to wear footwear that is not comfortable. Therefore, you must opt for ice skates for kids that

  • Fit well,
  • Are appropriately padded,
  • Allow the foot to breathe,
  • Are lightweight but strong.

You will have to trust your toddler when it comes to comfort, as the overall comfort provided by ice skates depends on several other factors such as fit.

criteria to choose ice skates

Check if they fit properly -

No matter what type of ice skates you choose to buy, you must ensure that they fit your toddler perfectly. Do not simply opt for the smallest ice skates.
Toddlers will refuse to wear ill-fitting skates.
To make sure that you have bought perfectly fitting ice skates, check if the ice skates

  • Leave room for toe movement and growth but
  • Do not leave any unnecessary negative space around the foot and behind the heel.

Check if the size is right -

The only way of ensuring that the ice skates feel comfortable on the toddler's feet and that they fit right is by buying the right size of ice skates. Do not simply order the same size as your toddler's regular shoes.

Remember that -

  • Ice skates are often sized smaller than regular shoes
  • Sizing varies with every brand

To zero down on the right size for your toddler -

  • Make your toddler wear ice skating socks
  • Place his foot on a piece of plain paper
  • Draw a neat outline around your toddler's foot
  • Measure across the length and breadth
  • Check brand-specific sizing charts and order according to your toddler's foot measurements.

Best Baby Ice Skates - Double blades

After reading the criteria, if you have decided for double blade ice skates, below are your best options.

Lake Placid Double Runner

Type - Figure Skates

Ideal for - Absolute beginner for use as first ice skates

Buy on Amazon - Pink

or Lake Placid Starglide black - Buy on Amazon

Pros

  • Trendy look
  • Double blade
  • Faux Fur lining for comfort
  • Simple traditional closure laces
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Not suitable for long-term use

Features and Review

These figure skates come in black, white and pink and are an ideal option for an absolute beginner toddler. Double blade ice skates ensure better balance and help in quickly building a toddler's confidence.
These ice skates' overall feel is also comfortable thanks to the vinyl upper and the faux fur trim and lining. The look of these skates is attractive for young toddlers.
The blades that come with these ice skates do not require sharpening.
The only downside of these skates is that the skates can't be used on a long-term basis as the double blades can restrict a slightly more advanced movement. The regular lacing pattern and the soft boot could also result in inadequate ankle support.
That said, these are the great first ice skates for any toddler who needs to be introduced to ice skating.

Best Toddler Ice Skates - Reviews of recreational options

In this section, I am reviewing the top recommendations of the best ice skates for toddlers as listed at the beginning of the article.

Bauer Lil Champ Ice Hockey Skates

Type - Hockey

Ideal for - Absolute beginners

Buy on Amazon Or Buy on Pure Hockey

Pros

  • Affordable
  • One-piece structure with a non-detachable blade
  • Comfortable for long practice hours
  • The buckle makes these easy to put on and take off
  • Come in a wide range of sizes

Cons

  • The buckle releases itself on its own

Features and Review

These Bauer ice skates are the best beginners ice skates available on the market. The ice skates offer the right amount of comfort and support for a toddler learning to step on ice.
These skates come from the smallest of sizes. Even a toddler as young as 18-months old can step on the rink wearing these. The ankle support offered by these sturdy-looking hockey skates is impressive.
Wearing and taking off these skates is extremely easy as the ice skates employ a buckle closure.
The padded tongue and the bootie-liner also make these comfortable on the tender feet of toddlers.
However, as with most other beginner-level ice skates, these skates are not suitable for slightly more experienced skaters due to their inherent structural limitations.

Lake Placid Summit Adjustable Ice Skate

Type - Hockey

Ideal for - Those looking for adjustable kids' ice skates (hockey)

Buy on Amazon

Pros

  • Adjustable up to 4 sizes
  • Super comfortable
  • Quick buckle closure
  • Moderately priced

Cons

  • Improper blade length to foot ratio

Features and Review

These ice skates feel comfortable on the foot thanks to their lightweight structure, deluxe padding, and warm-woven lining. The comfort that these skates deliver encourages beginners to spend more time wearing them. The buckle used by these skates also fixes them securely around the foot.
Plus, the look of these skates is also very attractive.
However, the primary reason why these skates are extremely popular on the market is their adjustability feature. The skates can be adjusted to expand to 4 full sizes and last much longer than many other ice skates, making them very economical.
Nevertheless, the same adjustability feature can result in an improper blade-length to boot ratio, which could impact performance.

Jackson Ultima Softec Vibe

Type - Figure

Ideal for - Those looking for adjustable kids' ice skates (figure)

Buy on Amazon

Pros

  • Adjustable
  • Affordable
  • Durable
  • Comfortable
  • Provide excellent ankle support

Cons

  • Delicate lever

Features and Review

The Vibe is an excellent product in the Jackson Ultima series. These ice skates are the perfect beginner ice skates for toddlers.
These ice skates allow size adjustments by a simple shift of the lever. To support the long-term usage of these toddler ice skates, the skates employ a durable nylon upper and a quality nickel blade.
These ice skates also are in the comfort department thanks to their soft boot supported by an external skeletal structure.
Moreover, what truly makes them one of the best ice skates for beginners is the excellent ankle support that they deliver despite their adjustability feature.
The only feature that could have been worked upon is the quality of the lever, which runs the risk of breaking if not handled carefully.

Additional ice skating equipment for toddlers

Toddlers learning to ice skate fall and slip quite frequently, and therefore buying appropriate protective gear is of utmost importance.

Therefore, here is a list of additional ice skating gear for a toddler that you should buy along with a pair of excellent toddler ice skates.

  • Helmet - In order to prevent severe head injuries and to avoid concussions, toddlers must use a helmet at all times.
  • Pads - Pads that have a foam or a gel cushioning ensure that your toddler's knees, elbows, and wrists remain injury-free by absorbing the shock of falls and slips.
  • Gloves - Many do not consider gloves to be imperative for ice skating. However, thin gloves that dry fast help in keeping the hands warm and also safeguard against injuries.
  • Socks - Socks are essential for keeping the feet warm while skating. But to get the best out of them, socks must be thin, seamless, and high enough to extend above the boot.
  • Clothes- Primarily, it is best to opt for multiple layers while ice skating that can be added or taken off as per your toddler's requirement. And they should be comfortable and allow for movement.
Choosing warm tops, jackets, full sleeve shirts are your best bet.
In terms of bottom wear, it is best to opt for form-fitting variants such as leggings for girls or long pants for boys. Jeans should be strictly avoided.
  • Dresses or costumes - Girls look adorable when they wear fancy tutu costumes on the rink. Not only are these costumes pretty, but they are also functional as the material is comfortable, warm, and can dry fast.

Tips to take care of infant ice skates

Ice skates need to be looked after in order to protect them from wear and tear, breaking and to help your toddler get the best out of them. Here are some handy tips for you -

  • Blades must be sharpened regularly -  Most ice skates require the blades to be sharpened before the first use and then regularly after that to ensure smooth and safe movement.
  • Blade guards must be used when stepping off the ice rink - Blade guards must be used as soon as the toddler steps outside the rink to prevent damage to the blade - However none exist for double blades
  • Blades must be dried - Ice skates blades must be dried immediately after each practice using an absorbent towel to prevent rusting and damage.
  • Blades must be covered - When carrying the skates back after skating, ice skates soakers must be used to wrap the blade. Soakers are blade covers that soak residual moisture from the blades.
  • Boots must be dried - Ice skating boots must be thoroughly air-dried after every use.

#1 Identify if your child is ready - Best Age to start ice skating

What age can a toddler start ice skating? Can a 2-year-old ice skate?

They might not be able to tell you, or express in any way that they are interested in ice skating until they are 3. However, any child who can walk, can also easily learn to skate. You can begin teaching them, but one needs to be really careful with a child so young as there can be technical issues as well as safety issues.

It is a good idea to wait until the kid can understand basic instructions before you strap them onto ice skates. Most people say that a good age is between 2 and 3 but all kids are different and so, the ages vary. Just observe your own child for his/her readiness. More details on my article about the best age to start ice skating.

To prepare before ice skating, why not read a book together to show the fun of ice skating?

#2 Choose the Best skates for your toddler

What skates for toddlers? Best ice skates to start with -

Go for skates which have solid plastic boots with adjustable straps which fit over the growing feet. The strap looks like a ski boot strap. It can be adjusted when the child is to go on the ice. The inner bootie is soft and is also adjustable, and hence, quite comfortable.

The children’s ice skates come in junior sizes. They can appear like a number followed by the letter J – such as, 6J.

Are double blade skates a good idea?

It is commonly believed that if a child begins using double blade skates its easier for them to balance and skate well.
However they will delay the child from learning proper techniques.

Hockey skates vs figure skates

You can learn with both types of skates. However, it is often considered that the long blade of figure skates makes it easier to find your balance at the beginning.
The rocker style blades on most ice hockey skates, make you more agile, but make you fall more easily.
Check out my article comparing both types of skates.

#3 Get the toddler ready for ice skating

Before doing any ice skating, make sure your toddler is ready to go on the ice:

  • Comfortable clothing - The child must be in comfortable clothes which are not too thick nor too thin. Moderately thick clothing allows for movement whilst keeping the child warm. Since the rinks are very cold, the fabric of the clothes the child is wearing must be warm and unrestrictive to movement.
  • No loose fabric - avoid scarfs that float
  • Thin socks - contrary to popular belief (and the words of non ice skater journalists), you should not wear thick socks. They hinder from finding good balance and end up not being really warm because of the lack of circulation. Prefer warm yet thin socks
  • Helmet - Always get the toddler to wear a helmet to avoid head injury when falling on the hard ice. Kids cannot brace themselves or avert getting hurt. A cycling helmet with a long brow can be sufficient, but it can be fun for your kid to wear a hockey helmet as long as it is not too big.
  • Gloves – Simple mittens are OK as the kids just need to push themself up from the ice when they have fallen down so there must be a protective layer separating their hands from the very hard and cold ice.
  • Knee Pads – They are generally protective if the child simply falls. Children fall forwards on their knees usually, or backward on their butt so knee pads can safeguard them from a lot of bruising and hurting.

And if you are really stressed (but ice skating is not that dangerous), you can add:

  • Elbow Pads – you can make them wear elbow pads if you feel they fall more on their forearms.
  • Wrist Guards – If the child seems likely to brace himself using his hands when he falls, there is a chance the wrist gets injured - to avoid this happening, use wrist guards.
  • Padded Pants – this is to avoid any injury to the backside if the child is more prone to fall on the hips. The padded pants would also avoid bruising and injury to the hip bone.

Get gloves

You can also check my article with my top 10 tips for beginners to avoid injury.

#4 Choose a kid-friendly rink time

You can find a good slot for the kid by doing basic research at the selected rinks and figuring if they have child specific timings.
The public sessions are usually really loud, people are skating really fast and it can be dangerous too as there are newbies going around in the rink as well.
Find a time slot in which there are fewer people and preferably the timing is kid-specific or at least, dedicated to amateurs.

You can also take your toddler to a frozen over pond or lake for learning but not without checking all safety pointers.

#5 Decide if you want training aid / or hold them

You may want to give your child support of some kind on the ice so to avoid painful falls, tears, and potential injuries. The help for the little ones can be either by using the aids or by holding them.

For achieving the balance point, the child is required to be standing up straight so that his/her weight is proportionately distributed over the blade. So, whatever you do to help, it must not change the weight balance of your child. Below are the 2 best options:

Option 1 – Hold your toddler the right way

The parent can skate alongside him/her & hold him/her from behind, placing support under the kid’s arms. Ask him/her to march and take little baby steps, but only one at a time. It will be counter-productive to let your child hang on to you completely because he/she needs to figure it out on his/her own to find the balance. Instead of carrying him/her all over the ice, just be there to help him/her find his/her feet on skates while you protect him/her from falling backwards.

Do not hold them from the front or from the side.

Option 2 – Have your toddler use an ice walker

You can use an ice walker but beware that experts say it hinders the toddlers in finding their balance & build skating skills. Most skaters when they use these walkers, tend too heavily lean forward on the walker and fall over all the time while trying to skate on their own after.

If the training aid is the right size and the kid is not bending forward when using it, then it is fine. Therefore, it is only for young children

#6 How to teach a toddler to ice skate - Start by marching

The first step on the ice must be marching.
Have your toddler simply march on the ice a little bit like a penguin, so that the child learns to transfer his/her weight properly from one foot to the other.
Another example you can take is a dinosaur.

#7 Fall on purpose early on and teach to stand up

Explain falling is ok

For a child, falling is the most potent trigger for tears. You will have to tell him/her falling is OK as long as one tries and learns to get up. Before he/she goes to the ice, he/she must be taught falling and getting back up on a normal floor.

It's going to be a frustrating process to learn and also teach but it can be made fun or done with some game that makes falling an OK thing. Teaching him/her about this must be intended to take the panic out of the fall. The child may get tired, scared or ashamed and upset if he/she falls, even if it doesn’t physically hurt him/her.

Show him/her what to do when he/she loses balance and fall. Normalize falling.

Teach to fall

Yes, there is a right way to fall: bend your knees when you feel the imbalance and dip to the side of your butt (here, the most important part is to not fall backwards and hurt the back of the head). Arms are to be kept a little bit out but also close to the body to help upon impact.

Teach to Stand up

After falling, the kid can get up using the correct way, which is:

  • Turning over to one’s hands and knees
  • Lifting up one knee
  • Pushing oneself up with both hands as one applies pressure to the toes.

The kid must practice this on a normal floor before doing this on the ice.

#8 Start gliding

Once your toddler is marching on the ice, over time, the march will flow into a glide.

When that happens, you can explain to change from loud feet (like Happy feet) to quiet feet, more stillness.

#9 Teach to stop

Starting to skate is fairly simple, however stopping needs to be taught once the kid starts gliding.

  • Before any other trick, make sure you teach them to stand with their feet together and push out the edges shaving the ice.
  • Then teach the snowplow: the child needs to bend the knees, bring toes together as an inverted V and push down for the balance. Once this is done successfully, get him/her to put the weight on one leg and slide the opposite skate out.

#10 Consider a class

You can get him/her enrolled in a class so that he/she gets to learn skating properly. It is by far the most ideal way to learn the skating, fast and effectively.
